Chapter 10 - The Midnight Transfer

We had six days.

My goal was to identify what “execution” meant.

The transfer order used corporate language.

Asset activation.

Bloodline verification.

Custodial execution.

Everett’s lawyers confirmed that at midnight on New Year’s Eve, control of Brooks Meridian would transfer based on Noah’s custody status.

If Noah remained legally with me, the voting trust passed to me.

If I were declared unfit, control passed to the approved family guardian.

Eleanor.

If Noah were legally dead, the trust reverted to Margaret.

Three outcomes.

Three women.

One child.

Margaret had designed a competition where each branch benefited from a different version of Noah’s existence.

Everett called an emergency board meeting.

The directors refused to recognize me without a valid birth certificate for Noah.

Rebecca could recreate one, but her medical license was under investigation.

Dr. Price’s signature had been compromised.

We needed the original delivery record.

Emily said the hospital stored paper surgical logs in a basement archive untouched by digital alterations.

Federal agents obtained a warrant.

The archive room had been emptied.

Only one metal cabinet remained.

Inside was the operating room sign-in sheet.

My name.

Rebecca’s name.

Emily’s name.

Eleanor’s name.

And Margaret Brooks.

She had been present during my C-section.

A ninety-year-old woman everyone believed dead had watched Noah’s birth.

The hospital camera showed her leaving in a wheelchair, face hidden beneath a cream hood.

She was not frail.

When no one watched, she stood and walked into a private elevator.

The elevator led to an underground tunnel connecting the hospital to Rosehaven’s original wing.

Investigators entered the tunnel.

They found a ceremonial room lined with family portraits and infant records.

No occult nonsense.

Something worse.

Corporate succession.

Each newborn was photographed beside a signed trust page.

Children reduced to proof of control.

Noah’s space waited empty.

A silver plaque carried his name.

The ceremony was scheduled for New Year’s Eve.

Then we found Margaret’s recorded message.

“Maren must attend willingly. Coercion invalidates the succession.”

That explained why Eleanor used legal pressure, not simple kidnapping.

They needed my signature or a court declaration of incapacity.

Margaret appeared on-screen.

Sharp-eyed.

Elegant.

Completely calm.

She addressed me by name.

“You believe motherhood gives you moral authority. It gives you biological leverage. Learn the difference.”

Everett shut off the recording.

Then Samantha arrived with urgent news.

A judge had reopened the emergency psychiatric petition.

New evidence claimed I had endangered Noah during our escape from the house.

The evidence was a body-camera video showing me dropping him into the snow.

I had never dropped him.

The woman in the footage wore my cream nightgown.

Her face was mine.

I thought forged documents were their strongest weapon—but the deepfake video could remove Noah before we reached a courtroom.

The metadata showed the video had been created on Everett’s corporate server.
