Chapter 8 - The Nurse Who Never Left

The visitor badge read Emily Grant.

A night nurse at the hospital had worn that name when she helped me hear Noah crying through the wall.

My goal was to find her before Eleanor moved her again.

Rebecca said Emily was seventeen.

Born under Rosehaven custody.

Raised in rotating foster placements.

She had no idea Rebecca was her mother.

Rebecca entered medicine to stay close to the network and eventually became Rosehaven’s director in name only.

Eleanor controlled admissions, transfers, and records.

Emily began working at the hospital six months earlier.

She unknowingly entered the same system that stole her.

During my delivery, Emily saw Eleanor switching Noah’s bracelet.

She helped me reach the hidden nursery.

That made her dangerous.

Eleanor had her reassigned the next morning.

Richard believed she was being held at a winter retreat owned by the trust.

Everett searched company properties.

One facility fit.

Mercer House.

A rehabilitation center closed for renovations.

Security footage from the road showed a hospital van entering that morning.

We contacted federal investigators with the evidence already collected.

For the first time, Everett did not try to solve it alone.

Agents surrounded Mercer House.

Inside they found Emily alive with four teenage girls.

Each girl had been raised under a false identity.

Each carried a birth number linked to Rosehaven.

But Eleanor was gone.

Emily recognized me immediately.

“You heard him.”

“Yes.”

She began crying.

She had placed Noah’s real bracelet back on him before I escaped.

Without that bracelet, I would never have proved he was mine.

Rebecca watched through the doorway.

She could not approach.

Emily believed her mother abandoned her.

Rebecca’s reward was seeing her daughter alive.

Her punishment was knowing the truth would not create instant love.

Then Emily gave us a flash drive she stole from Eleanor’s office.

It contained video from the night Noah was born.

Eleanor stood beside the incubator.

Richard appeared on a live video call.

He told her, “Do not move the child until the trust confirms.”

Eleanor answered, “You lost the right to give orders.”

That changed everything.

Richard had claimed he spent years trying to stop the system.

But he was still giving instructions during Noah’s transfer.

He said he meant “do not move him” for safety.

The video did not prove intent.

Then Emily opened a second clip.

Richard spoke privately to Rebecca.

“If Maren refuses the transfer, use the Vale file.”

He had known exactly how my birth identity would be weaponized.

Everett confronted him.

Richard did not deny it.

He said he was trying to keep Noah within a controlled location while building a case.

“By declaring him dead?” I asked.

“I did not authorize that.”

“Then why didn’t you warn me?”

“Because Eleanor watches everything.”

That excuse had become the family language of cowardice.

I thought Richard was the hidden ally behind the clues—but Emily’s recording proved he had also treated my son like a strategic asset.

The ledger on her flash drive showed Richard received a payment every time a Rosehaven child remained within the Brooks bloodline.
