Chapter 5 - The Postnup

The postnuptial agreement sat in Beatrice’s study.

My goal was to see exactly what they wanted.

Clause 1:

I waived any claim to Vance Consolidated voting rights.

Clause 2:

Any shares gifted personally to me converted into marital property managed by Julian.

Clause 3:

If divorce occurred within one year of childbirth, Julian received primary decision authority over the child’s family trust.

Clause 4:

Confidentiality.

Broad.

Permanent.

Then the worst line:

If Clara Vance became medically incapacitated before delivery, Beatrice Vance would serve as interim guardian for all family-trust matters.

Not custody.

But financial guardianship.

Still enormous power.

Who drafted it?

Charles Benton.

Same family attorney who had handled the fake prenatal test.

Then we found an email from Beatrice:

CLARA WILL SIGN AFTER THE PARTY.

Charles:

And if she doesn’t?

Beatrice:

Julian will make sure she does.

That sentence mattered.

Did she expect violence?

Maybe pressure.

Maybe intimidation.

Then another email clarified.

Charles:

No physical incident. Cameras everywhere.

Beatrice:

He loses control when embarrassed.

She knew the risk.

Used it.

Then the audit showed Charles had advised against the fake paternity test.

Arthur insisted.

Why?

Arthur wanted proof—false or real—that my child might not be Julian’s.

Because he feared Beatrice’s postnup strategy.

If the child appeared unrelated, Beatrice could not gain trust control through me.

Arthur believed he was blocking her.

But he used fraud to do it.

Again, people committing wrong acts to stop other wrong acts.

Then Arthur finally admitted the truth.

He had suspected Beatrice was manipulating Julian for years.

He secretly protected Chloe’s branch as a counterweight.

He thought family competition kept any one person from dominating.

Instead, it weaponized everyone.

Then Clara’s wristwatch mattered again.

Rebecca asked why I checked it before the doors banged.

I explained.

At 3:15, I had scheduled the audit committee to receive a final encrypted file if I did not cancel.

Dead-man timer.

Not because I expected violence.

Because I expected coercion.

The file contained every suspicious transaction I had collected.

The timer fired at 3:15.

Julian hit me at 3:16.

At 3:17 I knew the file had already delivered.

“It’s too late” meant they could no longer stop the audit.

That tightened the opening logic.

Then Rebecca opened my file.

One transaction none of us had discussed.

$6 million from Vance Consolidated to a fertility clinic.

Over three years.

Arthur.

Beatrice.

Charles.

All approved pieces.

Why would a corporation fund a fertility clinic?

Clinic name:

Legacy Reproductive Center.

The place where I had undergone one IVF consultation before conceiving naturally.

I had never proceeded with treatment.

Then my medical records showed someone created an embryo file in my name anyway.

I thought the succession scheme was only about legal paperwork—but the clinic payments suggested the family had been trying to control reproduction itself.

May you like

**Legacy Reproductive Center had stored genetic material under my name even though I never authorized an IVF cycle.**

*The embryo inventory showed whose genetic material had been paired with mine—and why Beatrice cared so much about who produced the next heir.*
