Chapter 8 - The Custody File

The file painted me as controlling.

Obsessive.

Emotionally unstable.

My goal was to test each claim against evidence.

Photographs showed me leaving therapy.

True.

I had attended prenatal counseling after stress.

Text excerpts showed me telling Julian:

I can’t trust anyone in your family.

True.

Because I had already found missing money.

A doctor’s note described anxiety.

True.

Then altered language:

Potential paranoid fixation.

Not from my doctor.

Inserted by Dr. Mallory.

Again.

They were building a narrative from real fragments.

Most dangerous kind of lie.

Then one section:

Aggression history.

No evidence.

Until baby shower.

My slap? I had not slapped anyone.

Julian had punched me.

But the file predicted:

Likely public outburst if confronted about Chloe.

They planned to provoke one.

Then security footage from the villa showed Beatrice instructing a staff member to keep extra champagne near my seat.

I was pregnant.

I would not drink it.

Why?

To place an open glass beside me in photos.

Later suggest I drank?

The plan was ugly.

Then a staged photo found on Chloe’s phone showed a champagne glass near my purse at a prior dinner.

Metadata revealed Chloe took it.

She claimed Beatrice asked her to “make Clara look less perfect.”

Not full context.

Still participation.

Then Julian’s custody draft requested supervised visitation for me after birth.

Proposed supervisor:

Beatrice.

That was the endgame.

Separate me.

Place baby under Beatrice’s control.

Then company succession could be managed through the child.

My unborn son was not merely heir.

He was governance.

Then Charles’s notes showed Julian expected to finalize custody pressure after delivery, not before.

Why attack me now?

He did not plan to punch me.

That was impulse.

But he did plan humiliation.

He told Chloe to announce her “pregnancy” publicly.

That was meant to destabilize me.

Then Chloe admitted she planned to reveal it after cake cutting.

The confrontation happened early because I confronted Julian about company transfers first.

He lost control.

Again, planned coercion plus unplanned violence.

Both matter.

Then Marcus Vale’s surveillance report included one photo I did not recognize.

Arthur meeting my obstetrician.

Why?

Dr. Sarah Lane said Arthur asked whether stress could induce early labor.

She refused to discuss my care.

Arthur claimed he was worried.

Maybe.

Then another email from Beatrice to Dr. Mallory:

If Clara delivers before the trust freeze is resolved, who signs neonatal financial consent?

He answered:

Spouse unless incapacity established.

There it was.

They were studying timing.

Then one hospital form surfaced.

Emergency financial guardianship for unborn Vance child.

Prepared.

Guardian:

Beatrice Vance.

Condition:

Maternal incapacity.

Again.

Then Rebecca asked if anyone had actually tried to create incapacity.

No direct evidence.

Until the villa kitchen inventory.

A medication bottle prescribed to me after dental surgery months earlier.

Sedative.

Found in Beatrice’s private purse.

Why?

She claimed I left it.

I had not.

Then staff testimony.

Beatrice asked a server to place “Clara’s medication” in my upstairs dressing room.

The server refused because the bottle was not labeled for event use.

That might have been an attempt to plant evidence.

Not drug me.

Still serious.

I thought Beatrice wanted me gone socially—but the custody file showed she was preparing to remove me legally by manufacturing an instability record.

**The custody strategy depended on proving I was unfit, and Beatrice had already started planting the pieces of that story before the shower.**

*The employee who refused to move the medication had also witnessed Beatrice destroy one document after my arrival—and the fragments identified the one person Arthur feared most.*
