Chapter 2 - Vivian’s Phone

My goal was to find out what Vivian knew.
Court security preserved both phones while Judge Harrison suspended the divorce hearing.
A forensic technician copied Vivian’s recent messages.
Most were ordinary.
Then one thread stood out.
Contact: C.
Not Caleb.
Different number.
C:
Envelope should arrive during hearing.
VIVIAN:
What if Harrison opens it before Nora signs?
C:
Create a disturbance.
My skin went cold.
The slap.
The shouting.
The spectacle.
Vivian had not lost control.
She had followed instructions.
Rebecca leaned over my shoulder.
“Who is C?”
The technician traced the number.
Registered to Charles Mercer.
Caleb’s corporate attorney.
The man who drafted our settlement.
The man who told me I had no claim to Whitfield Development because everything predated our marriage.
Charles had also represented William before his death.
That connected him directly to the missing codicil.
Then another message appeared.
C:
If Nora signs before the freeze, probate challenge becomes harder.
Vivian:
Caleb says she’ll sign if I push her.
I looked at Caleb across the courtroom.
He would not meet my eyes.
The humiliation had been strategy.
Make me angry.
Make me tired.
Make me want out.
Then put the papers in front of me.
Cause and effect.
Then Judge Harrison ordered Charles Mercer into chambers.
He was already in the building.
That mattered.
Why would a corporate attorney attend a divorce hearing unless he expected something tied to the company?
Charles claimed he came to support Caleb.
Judge Harrison showed him the messages.
Charles said the “envelope” referred to unrelated litigation.
The technician recovered deleted attachments.
One was a scan of William’s codicil.
Charles had possessed a copy.
That destroyed his denial.
Then he changed his story.
He said William drafted the codicil but never validly executed it.
Judge Harrison asked why Evelyn Price swore it had been signed.
Charles said Evelyn was confused.
Convenient.
Then Rebecca found Evelyn’s signature on a witness page.
Second witness:
Michael Trent.
William’s longtime driver.
Michael was alive.
He confirmed the signing by phone.
The codicil was real.
Then another detail surfaced.
The original had been stored in William’s private office safe.
Safe access after his death:
Caleb.
Charles.
Vivian.
I stared at the last name.
Vivian had no legitimate reason to access William’s safe.
She claimed she was helping Caleb clear personal items.
Date of access:
Two days after William died.
Then the safe log showed one file removed.
Document code:
W-17.
The codicil.
Now the theft path was visible.
Then the technician recovered a photo from Vivian’s deleted cloud album.
She was holding a sealed legal envelope beside Charles Mercer.
Date:
Eight months ago.
Same month Evelyn filed her sworn declaration.
Vivian had physically possessed the missing document.
I thought she was merely Caleb’s mistress—but she had been involved in the estate concealment before their affair became public.

**Vivian’s deleted photograph proved she had handled William’s missing codicil months before Caleb filed for divorce.**
*The metadata on that photograph revealed the place where the original document had been taken—and why my own mother had been there the same night.*
