Chapter 12 - The Uniform

My chain of command opened an administrative review.

My goal was to protect integrity, not demand favoritism.

Issues:

Conflict from newly discovered relationship to General Hayes.

Media exposure.

Potential outside financial interests.

Unauthorized record access victimization.

The review was routine but stressful.

General Hayes remained fully recused.

I disclosed everything.

Chloe trust.

Corporate litigation.

Family relationship.

Then one board member asked whether I had benefited from the general’s influence.

No.

Records confirmed my assignments predated his knowledge of paternity.

Promotions merit-based.

Then someone produced an anonymous allegation I had used the general to pressure investigators.

False.

Call logs showed no improper contact.

Then who filed?

Victoria’s former assistant had scheduled the complaint before arrest.

Again.

Residual sabotage.

Then board closed review.

No adverse action.

But one recommendation:

Future assignments outside General Hayes’s direct command structure.

Reasonable.

I accepted.

Then I was offered transfer to another installation.

Career opportunity.

But Chloe had just endured upheaval.

Did I go?

I requested six-month stabilization deferment.

Granted.

Not career abandonment.

Balanced choice.

Then Arthur interpreted that as me “choosing family.”

I corrected him.

“I’m choosing Chloe. Not your family system.”

He nodded.

Learning.

Then General Hayes requested retirement.

Not because scandal forced him.

He was already eligible.

He said public discovery of our relationship created complexity and he wanted distance from command implications.

I told him not to retire for me.

He said:

“I’m not. I’m retiring because thirty-eight years is enough.”

Good.

Then we began building a relationship slowly.

Coffee.

No “Dad.”

He told me about my mother.

I told him about Daniel Reed.

He respected Daniel as my father.

That mattered.

Then Chloe called him “General Grandpa” once.

Everyone laughed.

Natural.

Then Arthur and I discussed parenting.

He wanted equal custody eventually.

I required completion of therapy and acknowledgment of harm.

He agreed.

Then a family evaluator found no evidence he was unsafe with Chloe physically.

His public humiliation and false accusation harmed me, but he had not mistreated Chloe directly.

Then parenting time expanded gradually.

That made the story more grounded.

Then one surprise.

Arthur discovered Victoria had manipulated his own paternity records years ago.

Not because he was not James’s son.

Fresh DNA confirmed James.

But she once created a fake non-paternity report during a marital fight.

She had used DNA lies before.

Against James.

Arthur had been ten.

She threatened James with losing “his son.”

Pattern older.

Then James stayed.

Marriage survived.

Arthur grew up inside a household where genetic certainty was weaponized.

That explained why fake Chloe report hit him so powerfully.

Again.

Explanation.

Then the old fake Arthur test came from Sterling Biomedical predecessor.

Same methods.

Victoria had been practicing evidence manipulation for decades.

Then prosecutors reopened old civil fraud, but statute limitations restricted charges.

Still relevant history.

Then Arthur said:

“I became my father.”

“What do you mean?”

“He believed the paper because he was afraid to lose me. I believed the paper because I was afraid to lose control.”

That was insight.

Then separation counselor asked what I needed to consider reconciliation.

I said:

“Time. Consistency. And the freedom to say no.”

No promise.

Then Army transfer orders arrived.

Fort Liberty.

New role.

Career advancement.

Report in eight months.

I planned to go.

Arthur’s business ties were in Phoenix.

Would he follow?

Not my decision.

Then he said he would not ask me to stay.

Another small change.

Then one unresolved corporate matter arose.

Marcus Sterling’s lab had created multiple false kinship reports for other clients.

Not just us.

Federal investigators found seven cases.

Victoria was one client.

A broader medical fraud network.

I thought my family scandal had been isolated—but the lab had sold manipulated DNA reports to wealthy families for years.

**Sterling Biomedical had turned genetic uncertainty into a business, manufacturing inheritance and custody evidence for multiple clients beyond the Vances.**

*The next investigation showed who first taught Marcus how profitable a falsified DNA report could be—and the name reached back to Chloe’s birth hospital.*
