Chapter 4 - The Sample Cabinet

Sterling Biomedical had a private research freezer.

My goal was to find out whose DNA Victoria controlled.

Federal investigators sealed it.

Inside were coded samples from Sterling relatives.

Arthur.

Victoria.

Arthur’s late father, James.

Marcus.

Several cousins.

And people who had never consented.

Me.

Chloe.

General Hayes.

My mother Rebecca Reed.

How did Victoria have my mother’s sample?

Hospital pathology archive.

Rebecca had undergone surgery years earlier.

Sterling Biomedical acquired tissue through a research partnership.

Same pattern.

Then the backup false report compared my DNA against Rebecca’s cousin instead of Charles.

Designed to show no direct Hayes relation.

Then Marcus Sterling admitted he created the reports under Victoria’s instruction.

He claimed she told him it was “internal trust verification.”

He knew labels were manipulated.

That was fraud.

Then he revealed Arthur did not know about the original kinship test two years earlier.

That supported Arthur’s claim.

But did he know the new fake test was fake?

Marcus said Arthur brought the report to him asking if it was valid.

Marcus lied and said yes.

Arthur trusted family.

Weakness.

Then another email:

ARTHUR:

Why not test me again directly?

VICTORIA:

Because Emma will know.

Arthur:

Then tell her.

Victoria:

And hand her $48 million?

There.

Arthur had suggested truth.

Then later:

ARTHUR:

I need certainty.

Victoria:

You have it.

He accepted.

He did not insist.

That choice led to the villa confrontation.

Then I asked myself:

Would I have believed a test saying Chloe was not his?

No.

I would have repeated it immediately.

Arthur wanted the result because it matched fear.

That mattered.

Then investigators found a sealed envelope in Victoria’s study.

Label:

CHLOE — CONTINGENCY C.

Inside:

Emergency custody petition.

Petitioner:

Victoria Sterling.

Grounds:

Maternal fraud, paternal uncertainty, military deployment instability.

She planned to seek custody of Chloe if both Arthur and I became legally compromised.

Why?

A guardian could control the child’s trust voting rights.

There it was.

Even if Chloe remained heir, Victoria could try to control her through guardianship.

Then supporting evidence:

My deployment schedule.

Counseling notes.

Photographs of me leaving base at night.

All normal military life.

Reframed as instability.

Then Arthur’s alleged anger problems.

Debt records.

Affair rumors.

She was building cases against both parents.

Her son included.

I thought Victoria was protecting Arthur’s inheritance—but the custody petition showed she was ready to discredit her own son too if controlling Chloe became the easier path.

**Victoria’s real objective was not Arthur’s victory; it was permanent control of the 12% voting block, even if she had to take Chloe away from both of us.**

*The surveillance files attached to the custody petition showed who had been following me on base—and why one of those photographs could not have been taken legally.*
