Chapter 15 - The Father Who Stayed

Diane received twelve years.
Wade received life without parole.
Marcus received forty-five years.
Thomas was cleared of the crimes used to fake his death, but the military investigated decisions he made while hiding.
He accepted responsibility for not contacting authorities sooner.
He also accepted that I did not want to live with him.
Dad petitioned for permanent custody.
No one opposed it.
The judge asked what I wanted.
“To stay with Daniel.”
Thomas sat behind us.
He nodded before the judge even signed the order.
Afterward, he approached Dad outside the courtroom.
“You raised her.”
Dad said nothing.
“I won’t try to replace you.”
“You can know her.”
“If she wants.”
They shook hands.
It was not friendship.
It was respect built around one shared responsibility.

Rachel entered a protection program and began rebuilding her life.
She visited sometimes.
She never asked me to call her aunt.
She simply listened when I needed to speak.
The luxury wedding house was seized.
I asked that it not be sold to another family.
Part of the property became a memorial and evidence-training center for investigators working on hidden domestic crimes.
The basement floor was removed completely.
Emma was buried near her childhood home.
At her funeral, Thomas gave me a small box.
Inside was her wedding bracelet.
The same bracelet from the photographs.
“She wanted you to have it one day.”
I fastened it around my wrist.
