Chapter 16 - The Message Emma Left Me

A forensic technician recovered one damaged file from the green medical case.

It was a video Emma recorded days before her death.

She sat in the basement beneath a single hanging light.

Her face was bruised.

But her voice was steady.

“Ava, you may never see this.”

I stopped breathing.

“If you do, I need you to know Diane did not steal you at first. She believed she was protecting you.”

Diane had told the truth about one thing.

Emma continued.

“But protection becomes betrayal when fear lasts longer than the danger.”

She explained that she gave me temporarily to Diane after Marcus threatened Thomas.

Diane promised to take me to Daniel, who Emma trusted because of his record and character.

Instead, Diane kept me.

She later married Daniel and let him believe I was theirs.

Emma tried to reclaim me.

Wade stopped her.

The video ended with one request.

“Do not let the truth make you believe every year of love was false.”

I watched Dad beside me.

He had packed lunches.

Sat through school concerts.

Slept in hospital chairs.

Called from deployment every Sunday.

None of that was false.

Diane’s lies had shaped our family.

But Dad’s love had filled it.

I finally understood why truth hurt without erasing everything that came before it.
