Chapter 3 - THE FINGERPRINTS

Advanced testing proved the fingerprints in Thomas’s military file had been altered.
The man in my house was the biological Thomas Hayes.
The missing captain.
The husband I thought had never served.
Why deny himself?
Because Operation Night Harbor involved an unauthorized mission that exposed a hidden military procurement network.
Thomas disappeared after his team was ambushed.
Someone declared him missing, replaced portions of his file, and gave him a civilian identity.
Years later, he approached me under his own name but pretended never to have served.
He married the officer connected to the mission he believed betrayed him.
Me.
I had commanded Night Harbor.
I had ordered the route change that placed his team near the ambush.
I did not know an internal officer had altered the coordinates.
Thomas married me partly for access to my records.
Partly for revenge.
And, he claimed, partly because he loved me.
The mixture disgusted me.
Margaret said he was her biological son.
My mother said he had been adopted by the Hayes family through a military placement program.
DNA showed Margaret was not his mother.
Another identity collapsed.
Then the sealed casualty report in my safe was opened.
It named the officer who changed the Night Harbor route.
General Marcus Brooks.
The four-star general standing beside me.
He did not deny signing the order.
He said the signature was forged.
Thomas laughed.
Everyone in the house carried a version of the truth that accused someone else.
Then the knocking beneath the floor began again.
A second wall existed behind my mother’s cell.
Inside it, investigators found a military radio still transmitting.
Call sign:
NIGHT HARBOR ONE.
The soldier speaking through it had been missing eighteen months.

He said:
“Colonel Hayes, General Brooks is not the general you remember.”
