Chapter 13 - THE MIDPOINT

The footage from the morning Lily got sick was longer than I knew.

I had stopped watching after I carried her out.

The forensic specialist had not.

At 10:07 A.M., eight minutes after I left for the hospital, the living-room camera kept recording.

Daniel stood in the center of the room.

Evelyn pressed a cold cloth to her slapped cheek.

Neither looked panicked about Lily.

Daniel looked at his phone.

“I got it.”

Evelyn said, “All of it?”

“Both hits.”

“And the water?”

“I can cut around that.”

My fingers went numb.

Then Evelyn asked the question that changed everything.

“Will it be enough for the bank?”

Daniel shook his head.

“For custody leverage first. Then she signs.”

There it was.

Not inference.

Not a theory stitched together from dates.

Their own words.

Evelyn sat on the sofa.

“You should’ve pushed the loan through months ago.”

“She kept saying no.”

“You let her think no mattered.”

Daniel stared toward the front door where I had carried Lily out.

Then he said, “After this, it won’t.”

I stopped the video.

No one in Maya’s conference room spoke.

Nora began crying before I did.

Maya placed both palms on the table.

“This is the midpoint we needed.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“The connection. Custody pressure to financial coercion.”

Samuel listened through speakerphone.

“It also supports the lender’s fraud review.”

My throat tightened.

“And Lily?”

Maya’s face softened.

“It supports the argument that what happened to Lily was part of a deliberate setup.”

I covered my mouth.

For twelve chapters of my life—though I did not think of them that way then—I had kept asking why Daniel would stand there.

Now I knew.

He had not frozen.

He had not been weak.

He had not been caught between his wife and his mother.

He was directing the scene.

That truth hurt worse than the affair I once feared he might be hiding.

An affair would have meant he betrayed our marriage.

This meant he had turned our daughter’s distress into leverage.

My goal changed that afternoon.

Until then, I had wanted to stop the loan and keep Lily safe.

Now I wanted a complete accounting of what Daniel had done.

Not revenge.

Proof.

Enough proof that no future apology could rewrite the past.

Maya filed an emergency response attaching selected portions of the full recording and requested a temporary order preventing Evelyn from unsupervised contact with Lily.

Daniel called twenty minutes after filing.

I answered once.

“You’re trying to take my daughter.”

“No.”

“You’re poisoning everyone against me.”

“No, Daniel.”

My voice surprised me with how steady it sounded.

“I’m showing them what you did.”

He breathed into the phone.

Then he said, “You have no idea what happens if my company collapses.”

I looked at Lily.

“You should have thought about that before you used her to save it.”

I hung up.

📖 The recording finally proved the purpose of the fever scene, but knowing the truth forced me to decide whether saving Daniel financially was worth preserving Lily’s father. 👇
