Chapter 6 - FOUR HUNDRED TWENTY THOUSAND

Our house was worth just over $1.4 million.
I had paid most of the original down payment using money my mother left me before Lily was born. Daniel contributed too, and both our names were on the title.
We had discussed refinancing once.
Two years earlier.
We decided against it.
Now there was an active cash-out application for $420,000.
Maya connected me with a real-estate attorney named Samuel Ortiz.
He called the lender with me on the line.
The representative would not disclose everything because the file was under fraud review once I disputed authorization, but she confirmed one fact.
The application listed my electronic consent.
“I never consented.”
A pause.
“Mrs. Carter, did you receive a verification email on August twelfth?”
I searched.
Nothing.
She read the address.
It was mine.
But one character was wrong.
emmacarterdesign@...
My real address had an “s” after design.
Someone had created a near-identical account.
Samuel asked the lender to preserve every access log and document.
Daniel appeared at the hospital doorway while we were still on the call.
His face told me he knew what I was doing.
“You called the bank?”
“The lender.”
He looked past me toward Lily.
“She’s doing better.”
“Answer me.”
He lowered his voice.
“This is not the place.”
“It became the place when you used our sick daughter to stage a custody incident.”
His eyes hardened.
“I did not use her.”
“You told your mother to keep Lily there until I arrived.”
“I was trying to show people what happens when you lose control.”
“So you let her fever climb.”
“I didn’t know it was serious.”
“You measured 103.7.”
He stopped.
The room went quiet.
Then he made a mistake.
“I needed one clean recording.”
My breath caught.
“One?”
Daniel knew immediately what he had revealed.
I stepped closer.
“How many have there been?”
He shook his head.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“How many times have you staged something so you could record my reaction?”
“Emma, stop.”
“No.”
Lily stirred.
I lowered my voice.
Daniel glanced toward the hallway.
“I’m not discussing this.”
He left.
I opened our cloud storage.
Daniel and I had used a shared family folder for photos, insurance papers, tax returns, and Lily’s pediatric records.
I searched the word VIDEO.
Nothing.
Then I searched my own name.
A folder appeared inside an archived directory.
E.C. INCIDENTS.
Password protected.
Created six months earlier.
I tried Daniel’s old password.
Rejected.
Then Evelyn’s maiden name.
Rejected.
Finally I tried Lily’s birthday.
The folder opened.
There were eleven video files inside.

The oldest was dated February.
📖 I had thought that morning was the first trap Daniel set for me, but eleven archived recordings proved my marriage had been rehearsing my downfall for months. 👇
