Chapter 1 - The Bruises She Couldn't Hide

Grandpa Elias gently rolled my hoodie sleeve upward.
His warm smile disappeared.
Purple bruises covered my arm from my wrist to my shoulder.
The room became completely silent.
For weeks I had hidden them beneath long sleeves.
I told everyone I kept falling during volleyball practice.
Grandpa didn't believe me.
Now he didn't have to.
Standing in the kitchen doorway, Miranda crossed her arms with an amused smile.
She didn't even try to look ashamed.
Instead she laughed.
"Let that bruised piece of trash rot in agony," she sneered. "Nobody gives a damn about her miserable existence."
My eyes filled with tears.
Not because of the insult.
Because Grandpa had finally heard it himself.
Without saying a word, he stepped between us.
His seventy-five-year-old body looked frail.
But in that moment he felt like the strongest man alive.
He slowly pulled his phone from his jacket pocket.
"She kept every single secret you thought you took to your grave."
Miranda frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Grandpa pressed play.
Her own voice echoed through the kitchen.
"If Emily ever tells anyone, I'll make sure they think she's crazy."
Miranda's smile vanished instantly.
She lunged across the room.
"No!"
The phone crashed onto the hardwood floor.
She grabbed it with shaking hands.
"Who would believe you?" she screamed.
Before Grandpa answered...
Someone pounded violently on the front door.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
"OPEN THE DOOR RIGHT NOW!"
The deep voice shook the entire house.
Miranda turned completely pale.
Grandpa smiled for the first time that night.
May you like
"The gift I prepared for you is standing right outside."
👉 The pounding at the front door terrified Miranda far more than the recording, proving she knew exactly who had finally come for her.
