Chapter 2 - The Voice Outside

Miranda refused to move.
The pounding continued.
Each strike sounded harder than the last.
Emily instinctively stepped behind Grandpa.
"Don't answer it," Miranda whispered.
Grandpa calmly folded his arms.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"You've never been afraid of visitors before."
Miranda glared at him.
"You planned this."
"I planned nothing."
Another voice joined the first.
"Miranda Collins! Open this door immediately!"
She stumbled backward.
"Impossible..."
Grandpa quietly picked up the broken phone.
Although the screen had cracked...
The recording kept playing.
Miranda's voice filled the room again.
"No one will ever believe that girl."
Emily looked toward her grandfather.
"When did you record that?"
"Months ago."
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
Miranda suddenly grabbed her car keys.
"I'm leaving."
Grandpa blocked the hallway.
"No."
"You can't stop me."
"I don't need to."
The pounding suddenly stopped.
The silence felt even heavier.
Then someone slid an official envelope beneath the front door.
Grandpa smiled.
May you like
"They're early."
👉 The envelope pushed under the door carried something Miranda had spent years making sure Emily would never see.
