Chapter 12 - The Courtroom Attack

Celestine appeared by video at the emergency probate hearing.
Her face was bruised from the fall.
Her voice remained sharp.
Her attorney argued that Elias had lacked capacity when he amended the trust.
Then he attacked Maren.
He called her opportunistic.
Financially motivated.
Estranged from the family.
Maren sat perfectly still.
Three years earlier, those words would have shattered her.
Now she had documents.
Witnesses.
And patience.
Celestine’s attorney presented old messages supposedly showing Maren asking Adrian about the Vale inheritance before Elodie’s birth.
Harold stood.
“Your Honor, we request forensic examination of those exhibits.”
The judge agreed.
Within hours, metadata showed the screenshots had been altered.
One message originally read:
I don’t care what your grandfather leaves us. I just want you home for the ultrasound.
The version Celestine submitted removed the first sentence.
The judge’s expression hardened.
Then Harold produced Elias’s handwritten notes from his meeting with Maren.
Maren had asked Elias to keep Elodie out of succession politics.
Not place her in them.
Finally came the DNA evidence.
The independent test.
The preserved Adrian sample.
The original lab intake record.
The courier’s sworn statement.
The payment from Celestine.
The judge looked over her glasses.
“There appears to be extraordinary evidence of deliberate interference with this child’s identity.”
Celestine’s attorney tried again.
“Even if paternity is established, Ms. Hart is hostile to the Vale family and should not control—”
Adrian stood.
Everyone turned.
His attorney whispered urgently.
Adrian ignored him.
“Your Honor, may I speak?”
The judge allowed it.
Adrian looked at Maren.
Then at the screen showing his sister.
“Three years ago, I failed my daughter because I accepted manufactured evidence instead of protecting her mother long enough to learn the truth.”
Celestine’s face tightened.
Adrian continued.
“I will not use my name, my company, or this court to take anything from Maren now.”
His voice shook.
“She protected Elodie when I didn’t.”
The courtroom went silent.
“I support Maren remaining sole guardian of Elodie’s trust interest.”
Maren stared at him.
This cost Adrian something real.
Control.
Power.
Maybe hundreds of millions in future corporate influence.
And he surrendered it voluntarily.
The judge upheld Elias’s codicil pending final probate review.
Maren retained control of Elodie’s voting interest.
Celestine’s challenge failed.
Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered behind barriers.
Maren ignored them.
Adrian caught up with her.
“I meant what I said.”
“I know.”
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
He almost smiled.
Then Harold’s phone rang.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Maren stopped.
“What happened?”
Harold lowered the phone.
“Federal investigators finished tracing the missing company money.”
Adrian frowned.
“How bad?”
Harold looked at him.
“Worse than twelve million.”
“How much?”
May you like
“Forty-three.”
And nearly nine million had been transferred into accounts opened using Adrian’s identity.
