Chapter 1 - I SAW EVERYTHING

Victoria Vance’s hand locked around the edge of the baby carrier and jerked so hard that my shoulder slammed against the mansion wall.
“GIVE ME MY SON!”
Leo screamed against my chest.
I wrapped both arms around his tiny body and turned sideways, pressing my back against the polished hallway wall so she could not wrench him free.
“Victoria, stop!”
She released the carrier.
For half a heartbeat, I thought she had listened.
Then her right leg snapped forward.
Her heel drove into my side.
Pain exploded through my ribs.
I hit the wall hard enough to rattle an oil painting, but I stayed upright because Leo was strapped against me and falling meant falling on him.
He began wailing.
“PLEASE!” I gasped. “YOU’RE SCARING HIM!”
Victoria came again.
She grabbed my shoulders and tried to peel me away from the wall.
I pivoted, turning Leo completely out of her reach.
Then heavy footsteps struck the oak floor at the far end of the hallway.
Victoria froze.
Marcus Vance appeared beneath the chandelier.
Dark blue suit.
White shirt.
Face unreadable.
He walked toward us quickly.
Victoria released me so fast it was almost theatrical.
Her expression changed.
Fear replaced fury.
She pointed at me.
“SHE’S TRYING TO KIDNAP MY SON!”
I stared at her.
For one ridiculous second, I wondered if pain had made me hear wrong.
Marcus kept coming.
Victoria stepped toward him like a frightened wife searching for protection.
He looked at Leo first.
Then at me.
I had one arm wrapped under the carrier and one pressed against my ribs. Leo’s face was red from crying.
Marcus looked back at his wife.
Then his hand moved.
Fast.
One hard slap cracked across Victoria’s face.
She stumbled sideways.
“MARCUS?!”
He stepped between us before she could recover.
“I SAW EVERYTHING.”
Victoria went white.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Terrified.
I had worked for the Vance family for eight months.
I had seen Victoria humiliate staff, control schedules, rewrite conversations, and treat every room like something she owned.
I had never seen her afraid of Marcus.
Until that sentence.
I saw everything.
Leo cried harder.
Marcus did not turn around.
“Elena, get Leo into the nursery suite and lock the inner door.”
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“No.”
Marcus ignored her.
“Take your phone.”
That detail stopped me.
“My phone?”
“Yes.”
Victoria’s gaze shot toward my beige uniform pocket.
There.
The second flash of panic.
I pulled the phone out.
The screen showed three unread messages from an unknown number.
I had not heard them arrive during the struggle.
Marcus noticed my face.
“What?”
I opened the first.
DON’T GIVE LEO TO VICTORIA.
The second:
SHE IS TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU TOOK HIM.
My hands turned cold.
The third contained a photograph.
It showed a printed document lying on Marcus’s study desk.
PETITION FOR EMERGENCY TERMINATION OF HOUSEHOLD ACCESS.
My name appeared beneath it.
Elena Miller.
Allegation:
Attempted unlawful removal of minor child Leo Vance.
I looked up.
Victoria was no longer staring at Marcus.
She was staring at my phone.
Then she whispered something that made my stomach drop.
“You weren’t supposed to get that yet.”
Marcus heard her.
So did I.
And suddenly I understood that the attack in the hallway had not begun when Victoria grabbed Leo.
May you like
It had begun before I ever walked into that corridor.
📖 Victoria’s panic over the message told me the kidnapping accusation already existed on paper, and I needed to learn why she wanted it attached to my name. 👇
