Chapter 4 - MARK’S SECOND FILE

Mark became an Internal Affairs informant eight months before his promotion.
He provided small pieces of evidence against Charles and several retired officers.
Nothing that endangered himself.
Enough to create the appearance of cooperation.
Hayes believed Mark used the informant file as insurance.
If arrested, he could claim every illegal act supported an undercover investigation.
Mark insisted Laura’s confinement was part of that operation.
Laura called it absurd.
Internal Affairs never authorized kidnapping, sedation, or imprisonment.
Mark had also continued falsifying cases while supposedly cooperating.
The most damaging evidence came from his body camera.
He believed he erased the files.
The backyard upload restored them from a private server.
One video showed Mark planting a gun inside a suspect’s vehicle.
Another showed Charles threatening a witness’s family.
The final clip showed Mark entering Blue Harbor with my mother.
Rebecca was restrained in a wheelchair.
She looked directly at him.
“You’re Ella’s husband.”
Mark turned off the camera.
The audio continued.
He told Rebecca he could protect me if she signed a statement withdrawing all allegations against Charles.
She refused.
He ordered staff to increase her medication.
My husband had not been trapped between loyalty and justice.
He actively chose power.
His promotion gave him access to homicide investigations and confidential witnesses.
Charles planned to place the entire network beneath Mark’s control.
The party was a coronation.
I was expected to smile beside him.
Then die.
Laura revealed that she had uncovered another motive for my planned death.
Morgan-Hale Properties, the company my mother secretly created before disappearing, owned the land beneath three police facilities.
I inherited the controlling interest without knowing it.
Mark needed my signature to transfer the land to a Carter trust.
I had refused several documents because the explanations did not make sense.
He began calling me unstable shortly afterward.
The assault at the party would support an emergency guardianship petition.
My death would transfer the shares to my husband.
Rebecca Sloan found the petition inside Charles’s office.
Judge Samuel Vale had already signed it.
The date was the next morning.
The legal system stood ready to convert public violence into proof that I needed control.
Then Laura remembered something from the underground room.
Charles once brought a young man below the patio and called him “the real Mark.”
I thought medication had confused her.
DNA from a bloodstain proved another man had been held there.
The sample was genetically identical to my husband.
Mark had a twin.
One brother became a detective.
May you like
The other disappeared from every family record.
Charles might have prepared a replacement if Mark ever stopped obeying.
