Chapter 9 - THE FATHER’S LAST COMMAND

Charles contacted the remaining Brotherhood officers and ordered them to destroy every archive.

Fires began at two Blue Harbor facilities.

Federal teams saved most patients, but decades of records burned.

Rebecca remembered a master ledger hidden inside the retired-officers memorial hall.

The promotion party’s guest list contained its access committee.

Hayes, temporarily reinstated for the emergency, led the raid.

Inside the memorial’s basement were confession tapes from judges, prosecutors, officers, and politicians.

Charles used them to control the city.

One tape showed my father, Michael Hale.

I believed he died from cancer when I was twelve.

He had actually discovered Rebecca was alive and confronted Charles.

The tape captured Charles forcing him to choose.

Stop searching and keep Ella safe.

Or continue and lose both daughter and career.

My father pretended to surrender.

Then secretly helped Rebecca escape Blue Harbor once.

Charles poisoned him slowly through medication supplied by a Brotherhood doctor.

The cancer story covered the symptoms.

Both of my parents had fought the network.

Neither trusted me with the truth.

They wanted to preserve my childhood.

Instead, the silence delivered me into Mark’s marriage.

Charles appeared at the memorial hall while officers searched.

He took me hostage in the archive room.

He pressed a gun beneath my ribs and ordered Hayes to lower his weapon.

“You were always the difficult one,” Charles whispered.

“No. I was the one who remembered.”

His grip tightened.

He blamed Rebecca for turning me against family.

I told him family did not require fear.

He laughed.

“All families require obedience.”

Then Mark’s voice came through the room’s speaker.

He had agreed to cooperate from custody and accessed the Brotherhood system.

“Dad, let her go.”

Charles looked toward the camera.

“You chose her over me?”

Mark answered, “I chose the deal.”

Even now, self-interest.

Charles raised the gun.

A shot struck his shoulder.

Matthew stood in the doorway.

He had entered through the old service tunnel.

For one second, he looked like a rescuer.

Then he pointed his weapon at Mark’s camera.

“Open every cell and release every witness to me.”

He had not come to surrender.

He had come to inherit the archive.

I stepped away from Charles.

Matthew held out his hand.

“Ella, come with me.”

“No.”

“I saved your mother.”

“You used her.”

“I saved Laura.”

“You helped frame her first.”

His face hardened.

“You think courts will protect them?”

“Not perfectly.”

“Then why trust them?”

“I trust evidence, oversight, and the right to say no more than I trust one man.”

He looked almost wounded.

His entire identity depended on being the better brother.

I refused to validate it.

Federal officers entered.

Matthew escaped through the tunnel.

Charles was arrested.

The master ledger survived.

But Matthew took one drive.

May you like

It contained the names and locations of every protected witness connected to the Brotherhood.

Laura’s name was first.
