Chapter 10 - THE FALSE DETECTIVE

The midnight location was a closed courthouse in Lower Manhattan.

Federal agents monitored the building while Caroline followed the plan under protection.

She wore no disguise.

The operation had depended on a false Claire—no, a false Lena. We would not repeat it.

Instead, Caroline carried an empty envelope and her own identity.

A woman entered wearing Detective Ortiz’s coat and badge.

Her face resembled Ortiz but was not identical.

The badge passed electronic security.

Fingerprint verification succeeded.

Black Door had access to biometric cloning.

The woman realized the trap and tried to flee.

Agents arrested her.

Her name was Rachel Hayes, Ortiz’s half sister.

Their father had worked for Carter security.

Rachel grew up believing Lena received the legitimate life while she was trained for covert operations.

The same sibling resentment appeared again.

Black Door recruited people whose identities had been divided by powerful families.

Rachel carried a list of active replacements.

Judges.

Doctors.

Corporate officers.

Witnesses.

One entry read VINCENT MORETTI.

A substitute had been prepared to assume Vincent’s public role if he cooperated with federal authorities.

The replacement was his son.

Vincent claimed he had no children.

Thomas looked away.

Vincent did have a son.

My father.

Thomas Bennett was biologically Vincent’s child, raised by another family to separate inheritance from criminal risk.

Vincent was not my uncle.

He was my grandfather.

The family tree had been deliberately falsified.

My mother and father were not related, but Vincent had hidden the truth to maintain control over Thomas.

Every time we believed the structure was clear, another document changed it.

I stopped asking which blood connection created obligation.

None did automatically.

Vincent surrendered financial records and tunnel maps in exchange for no immunity.

He accepted charges for unlawful confinement, bribery, and obstruction.

His evidence helped dismantle Carter police protection.

Ryan, Margaret, and Carter executives faced federal indictments.

My mother faced charges related to Caroline’s unlawful sedation and identity scheme.

Elena faced investigation for earlier surveillance and manipulation.

No survivor received automatic innocence.

Then Rachel Hayes offered the location of Black Door’s central facility.

An unfinished subway station beneath Midtown.

Agents entered.

Rows of dressing rooms held wigs, prosthetics, forged records, and personal histories.

The final room replicated my luxury apartment bathroom.

Broken door.

Marble floor.

Whiskey glass.

Blood-stained towel.

Someone had rehearsed the night Ryan broke my arm before it happened.

A video showed Ryan practicing his lines with an actress.

“Nobody’s going to come rescue a dog like you.”

The assault was not only expected.

It had been scripted.

May you like

The person directing him stood behind the camera.

Elena.
