Chapter 7 - THE FATHER WHO DIED TWICE

Thomas Bennett had survived the car accident.

Vincent moved him into hiding after Carter police officers arrived at the hospital.

My mother believed he died because Vincent told her that.

Vincent claimed the lie protected us.

My father disagreed.

He spent twenty-three years inside witness protection that gradually became private confinement.

Vincent controlled his movements, calls, and access to me because Thomas remained the only person who could authenticate the archive.

Over time, protection became imprisonment.

Thomas escaped six months earlier with my mother’s help.

They entered New York to expose both Carter and Vincent.

The vault became their final safe room.

My father looked older, thinner, and nothing like the heroic memory I carried.

He held a hard drive containing the full archive.

Ryan aimed Vincent’s stolen gun.

Ortiz’s team moved behind the mechanical doors.

Margaret pressed the syringe against Evelyn.

Everyone waited for someone else to surrender.

Thomas looked at me.

“Lena, do not let either family take the drive.”

“Which family?”

He nodded toward Vincent.

That was when I learned Vincent was not merely my father’s attorney.

He was my uncle.

My mother’s half brother.

The black card came from family too.

Every path still led through blood and debt.

Thomas confessed that he helped Vincent hide money before working for Carter Development. When he discovered the fire plan, he copied records implicating both sides.

Vincent hid him to prevent Carter retaliation.

Then refused to release him because Thomas could also destroy Vincent.

“You told me he was protected,” I said.

Vincent answered, “He was.”

“Could he leave?”

“No.”

“Then he was a prisoner.”

Vincent’s face remained still.

“Yes.”

The word cost him more than denial would have.

Ryan fired toward the hard drive.

Thomas dropped.

The bullet struck the metal vault door.

Ortiz’s officers entered.

Margaret injected Evelyn.

Dr. Reed’s antidote team was waiting nearby because we had anticipated sedation.

My mother collapsed but continued breathing.

Vincent tackled Ryan.

Thomas threw me the drive.

I caught it against my chest with my right arm.

Margaret ran toward the freight tunnel.

Detective Ortiz blocked her.

Within seconds, Ryan and Margaret were restrained.

No dramatic victory.

Only people breathing hard around decades of evidence.

Then the drive’s screen activated.

A deletion timer had begun.

Five minutes.

Thomas said two passwords were required.

His.

And mine.

“What is mine?”

“The last line of The Little Red Door.”

I remembered the story.

When the red door opens, tell the truth before the house decides for you.

I entered the sentence.

Thomas entered his code.

The deletion stopped.

Files began copying to federal servers.

Carter accounts.

Vincent properties.

Police payments.

Judges.

Hospitals.

Insurance companies.

My father had built evidence capable of destroying everyone in the room.

Then one folder opened automatically.

LENA BENNETT — IDENTITY TRANSFER.

The photograph inside was not mine.

It showed another girl in a red coat.

Same age.

Same face.

I had an identical twin.

One of us survived the fire.

May you like

The other grew up as Lena.

The archive did not say which one I was.
