Chapter 1 - The Bride’s Violent Secret

“You ruin everything you touch!”
Madison Bennett drove both hands into her sister’s chest.
Lieutenant Avery Bennett staggered backward across the marble ballroom floor.
Her shoulder struck the champagne tower.
Crystal exploded around her.
Hundreds of guests recoiled as glasses shattered against the marble, spraying champagne across Avery’s pristine white Navy uniform.
She dropped hard to one knee.
One hand caught her weight among the broken crystal.
A sharp edge sliced her palm.
Blood began to bead across her skin.
Still, Avery did not strike back.
She lifted her face slowly, wet dark hair clinging to her cheek.
“You lied to get rid of me.”
Madison lunged again.
Prince Julian caught his bride’s arm before her hand could reach Avery.
“Enough!”
Then a silver cane struck the floor.
King Edmund had risen from the front row.
His face had gone completely white.
He was not looking at the ruined champagne tower.
He was staring at the crescent-shaped scar beneath Avery’s jaw.
“Madison told us you were dead.”
Avery touched the scar.
“What?”
The King stepped closer, studying her military ribbons.
Recognition replaced shock.
“You’re Harbor Seven.”
The royal guards stopped advancing toward Avery.
