Chapter 15 - The Promise to Their Mother
“When Dad left, Mom made me promise to protect you.”
Avery’s voice trembled for the first time.
She had been seventeen.
Madison was twelve.
Their father disappeared after draining the family’s savings.
Avery worked evenings, helped pay the mortgage, and postponed college for a year.
When she joined the Navy, part of every paycheck went home.
She never told Madison.
Their mother insisted the younger girl should not feel like a burden.
Avery protected Madison from the truth so thoroughly that Madison came to believe Avery had simply escaped into an exciting life.
“I paid your first semester at Georgetown,” Avery said.
Madison stared at her.
“No. Mom did.”
“Mom had forty-three dollars in her account.”
Nora nodded through tears.
“Avery paid anonymously because she knew you would refuse.”
Avery continued.
“When you needed surgery at nineteen, I sold the car Dad left me.”
Madison’s lips parted.
“When your first engagement ended, I used emergency leave to stay with you for nine days.”
“You judged me.”
“I stopped you from driving after you swallowed sleeping pills.”
Several guests lowered their eyes.
Madison had spent years rewriting protection as humiliation.
Avery touched the scar beneath her jaw.
“I never wanted to be the brave sister. I wanted to be your sister.”
Madison’s anger faltered.
For one second, grief appeared.
Then she looked at Julian.
“Tell them this doesn’t change us.”
Julian did not move.
