Madison told Avery she was marrying a private European financier named Julian Moreau.
She claimed the ceremony would be small.
Family only.
Then she repeatedly changed the date.
First June.
Then September.
Finally, she said the engagement had ended.
Avery believed her because she was deployed for months at a time and their relationship had become painfully distant.
Meanwhile, Madison’s royal wedding preparations filled international society pages.
But publicity in the United States was carefully restricted for security.
The ceremony was billed publicly as a private diplomatic event at an unnamed Chesapeake estate.
Madison also blocked Avery’s number on several relatives’ phones and told guests that her sister had died in service.
Anyone who questioned the lack of a funeral was told the burial had been private because of classified circumstances.
She forged an obituary using an overseas veterans’ organization.
She created a memorial donation page.
She even accepted condolences.
Avery discovered none of it until the message from their mother’s old number arrived.
The message had not come from a ghost.
It came from Nora, their mother’s longtime nurse.
Nora had kept the old phone because it contained family photographs.
Days before the wedding, she heard Madison discussing the Harbor Seven story with a public-relations adviser.
Nora realized Avery had been erased.
She sent the warning and then drove toward the estate with the cedar box.
But she never reached the ballroom.
