Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN ABOVE DIANE

Her name was Evelyn Mercer.
She was ninety-one years old.
Officially, she died eighteen years earlier.
In reality, she founded the system.
Diane inherited it.
Margaret managed it.
Linda financed it.
Judge Mercer legalized it.
Dr. Vale medicalized it.
Evelyn watched all of them.
She appeared frail in the video, but her voice was sharp.
“Diane became emotional. Emotion ruins systems.”
She admitted ordering the creation of Subject Twelve.
The Mercer trust controlled land, companies, and political influence worth hundreds of millions. Its original charter required a male biological heir.
No son meant dissolution of the trust.
Evelyn refused to let that happen.
She selected my eggs because I carried the strongest genetic marker.
She selected Robert’s sample for my daughter and a separate donor for Subject Twelve.
Diane believed she controlled the pregnancies.
She had been used too.
Evelyn offered Linda’s life in exchange for the children and ledger.
Daniel wanted to save our mother.
I wanted to stop Evelyn.
Both were possible only if we stopped treating people as bargaining pieces.
Ortiz traced the video to Helix Crown’s mountain research campus.
Federal teams surrounded it.
Evelyn had installed explosives in the archive wing.
She threatened to destroy the records naming hundreds of victims and adoptive families.
Rebecca opened negotiations.
Sarah entered the building through an old maintenance tunnel she designed years earlier.
I remained outside under medical supervision.
Then contractions began.
Too early.
Too fast.
Dr. Brooks transported me to the nearest hospital.
As I was rushed into labor and delivery, Sarah reached the archive room.
She found Linda alive.
Evelyn was gone.
The ledger remained on a desk beside a countdown timer.
Sarah cut the correct wire with fourteen seconds remaining.
The archive survived.
My daughter was born an hour later.
Small.
Breathing.
Alive.
I named her Hope.
Subject Twelve remained stable at another hospital.
For the first time, the two children existed under protection rather than ownership.
Then the DNA report arrived.
Subject Twelve was not my son.
Evelyn had lied.
He was Diane’s biological child.
Created from an egg taken from her decades earlier.
May you like
The grandson she worshipped was actually her son.
And the listed sperm donor was Luke.
