Chapter 14 - THE FINAL HEARING

The federal hearing lasted three weeks.

Diane, Margaret, Linda, Judge Mercer, Dr. Vale, Helix Crown executives, clinic staff, brokers, and adoptive intermediaries faced charges.

Some cooperated.

Some lied.

Some claimed they saved children from unstable homes.

The records proved they created instability, then profited from it.

Robert’s video was played.

The dining-room recording was shown in full.

The jury watched Diane swing the bamboo stick.

They saw me cover my belly.

They heard her call a girl worthless.

Then prosecutors displayed records proving that same girl had been intended as medical material.

Diane stopped looking at me after that.

Margaret testified against her twin.

Linda admitted selecting me as a research subject but argued she later loved me.

I believed the love was real.

I also believed love without respect could still become abuse.

Luke testified that Diane controlled him.

The prosecutor asked why he allowed our marriage after learning I was his sister.

He had no answer.

His silence became part of the evidence.

Sarah testified about the artificial womb program.

Eleanor testified about the erased daughters.

Daniel testified about the false messages and isolation.

I testified last.

I did not speak only about the stick.

I spoke about the years before it.

The subtle questions.

The medical appointments Diane arranged.

The phone calls Luke intercepted.

The family photographs without women’s names.

The way cruelty hid inside tradition until the moment it became physical.

The jury found Diane guilty on every major count.

Judge Mercer and Vale were convicted.

Helix Crown’s assets were seized.

Linda accepted a plea and agreed to fund victim recovery.

Luke’s marriage to me was annulled.

He surrendered all legal claims connected to Hope.

The court recognized Eleanor, Sarah, and me as victims of unlawful transfer.

Subject Twelve entered protected medical guardianship.

No Mercer owned him.

No company controlled him.

Evelyn remained missing.

The network had fallen.

Its founder had not.

Three months later, I stood inside the dining room again.

The broken bamboo stick had been sealed in an evidence case.

The ancestral shelf was empty.

I removed every portrait.

Then I placed photographs of Eleanor, Sarah, Hope, and the other identified girls across the shelves.

Their names appeared beneath every frame.

Daniel helped repair the hardwood floor.

He asked if I wanted the cracked section replaced.

I said no.

I wanted one scar left visible.

Not all damage needed to disappear to prove healing.

Rebecca arrived carrying a final file recovered from Evelyn’s private archive.

It contained a photograph of Diane as a young woman holding newborn twins.

One was me.

The other was Sarah.

But another bassinet stood beside them.

A third baby.

Male.

The label read LUKE MERCER.

Luke was not Robert’s biological child.

He had also been placed into the family.

The donor listed on his record was Judge Samuel Mercer.

That meant Subject Twelve was not Diane’s son with Luke.

The genetic labels had been intentionally switched.

Someone wanted the court to believe the wrong relationships.

Rebecca turned to the final page.

The true biological mother of Subject Twelve was listed there.

CLAIRE MERCER.

My name.

The earlier DNA report had been fabricated.

He was my son after all.

Before I could process it, the hospital called.

Subject Twelve had been taken from protective custody.
