Chapter 3

PART 3:
The recruits heard every word.
Maya tried to sit up.
Price pressed a hand to her shoulder.
“Stay down.”
“I can finish,” she whispered.
“No,” Price said. “You already did more than enough.”
Her eyes closed.
And for the first time that morning, nobody thought she was weak.
The ambulance took Maya to the aid station.
The platoon finished the march in silence.
No jokes.
No complaints.
No one looked at Vance unless they had to.
Back at the barracks, whispers moved faster than rainwater under doors.
Combat scars.
Maya Lin had combat scars.
But how?
She was a recruit.
She was quiet.
She never talked about home.
She never talked about why she joined.
She never talked about the way loud explosions during training made her eyes go still for one second before she forced herself back into the present.
At the aid station, Maya woke beneath fluorescent lights.
A clean bandage wrapped her ribs.
An IV ran into her arm.
Sergeant First Class Price stood near the foot of the bed.
Beside him was Captain Elena Brooks, the company commander.
Her face was serious, but not unkind.
Maya tried to sit up.
Brooks raised a hand.
“Don’t.”
Maya looked away.
“I’m sorry, ma’am.”
“For collapsing?”
“For causing trouble.”
Price gave a short, humorless laugh.
“You think bleeding internally through a reopened scar is causing trouble?”
Maya did not answer.
Captain Brooks pulled a chair beside the bed.
“Maya, why didn’t you disclose the pain earlier?”
Maya’s jaw tightened.
“Because every time I slow down, someone thinks they were right about me.”
Brooks heard the weight under the words.
Not attitude.
Exhaustion.
Price opened her medical file on the tablet.
His eyes moved across the notes.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
“Captain.”
Brooks looked over.
Price turned the screen slightly.
There was a flag on Maya’s file.
Prior Department of Defense civilian service.
Medical waiver approved.
Blast injury.
Evacuation operation.
Classified commendation attached.
Brooks looked at Maya.
“Maya,” she said quietly, “you were in Kadir Province.”
Maya’s eyes closed.
The room changed.
The rain outside faded.
The smell of disinfectant became dust.
May you like
The white ceiling became smoke.
👉 What happened in Kadir Province was the secret Maya had carried under her uniform every single day.
