Chapter 4

PART 4:
She was nineteen again.
Not a soldier.
Not yet.
Just a local-born American contractor’s daughter who had grown up between two countries, translating for a medical aid team near a forward outpost.
She remembered the convoy.
The explosion.
The screaming.
The first truck burning.
A young American soldier trapped beneath metal.
Another calling for his mother.
Maya had not been armed.
She had not been trained for war.
But when the blast hit, she ran toward it anyway.
She dragged one wounded soldier behind a wall.
Then another.
Then stayed with a third through the night with her own blood soaking through her shirt.
A Marine had pressed a field dressing into her hand and shouted, “Hold this!”
So she held it.
For six hours.
Until rescue came.
Until she woke up in a hospital with tubes in her chest and a doctor telling her she should have died.
The scars came from that day.
So did the silence.
So did the reason she enlisted.
Captain Brooks read the report without speaking.
Then she looked up.
“You saved three service members.”
Maya’s voice was flat.
“Two lived.”
Price’s face softened.
“That still matters.”
Maya turned her head toward the wall.
“I didn’t join so people would know that.”
“Then why did you join?” Brooks asked.
Maya’s hand moved to the edge of the blanket.
She gripped it the same way she had gripped her collar.
“Because one of the soldiers I pulled out told me I had more courage than half the people wearing the uniform.”
Her eyes filled, but she blinked the tears back.
“I wanted to earn it for real.”
Brooks was quiet for a long moment.
Then she said, “You already had.”
Maya shook her head.
“No, ma’am. I wanted to earn it the same way everyone else does. No pity. No special treatment. No one looking at me like a wound.”
That was why she hid the scars.
Not because she was ashamed.
Because she was tired of being treated like a story instead of a person.
But Drill Sergeant Vance had seen only the small recruit.
The easy target.
The one he thought he could break.
May you like
He had no idea she had already survived a battlefield before she ever stepped onto his.
👉 But once command learned what Vance had done on that trail, the man who humiliated Maya was about to lose control.
