Chapter 8

PART 8:

Maya opened the folded piece of paper.

Inside were three words written in twenty-seven different hands.

Still not quitting.

Maya pressed the paper to her chest.

For a moment, she could not speak.

The mud.

The shouting.

The pain.

The blood under her collar.

All of it had led here.

Not to revenge.

To recognition.

She remembered lying face-first in the mud while Vance stood over her.

She remembered the weight of the ruck pinning her down.

The rain in her eyes.

The blood under her uniform.

The recruits too afraid to move.

And her own voice, barely strong enough to leave her mouth.

“I’m not quitting.”

At the time, Vance thought those words were stubbornness.

Maybe even arrogance.

But now Maya understood what they really were.

A promise.

A promise to the soldiers she had tried to save in Kadir Province.

A promise to the younger version of herself who woke up in a hospital and was told she should have died.

A promise to every quiet person who had ever been mistaken for weak simply because they did not explain their pain.

Maya looked around at the platoon.

No one was laughing at her now.

No one was looking through her.

No one was waiting for her to break.

They were standing with her.

The young recruit beside her nodded toward the note.

“You carried us before we even knew it.”

Maya swallowed hard.

“I didn’t do anything special.”

He shook his head.

“You survived. Then you came back and chose to serve anyway. That’s special.”

Maya looked down at the words again.

Still not quitting.

May you like

This time, she let herself believe them.

👉 But the deepest truth about Maya’s strength was something Vance never understood until it was far too late.
