Chapter 3 - The Drawer Behind The Lies

I waited until Candice was gone.
She had always been careful.
That was something I now understood.
She never left papers lying around.
Never forgot passwords.
Never made careless mistakes.
But people who hide things always leave something behind.
I walked into our bedroom.
The room that once felt like home suddenly felt unfamiliar.
I opened the nightstand drawer.
Nothing.
Then I noticed the bottom panel looked slightly uneven.
I pulled harder.
The false compartment opened.
Inside was the silver cup.
Alongside it were pawnshop receipts.
Multiple bank cards.
And a folder.
The label made my stomach tighten.
“WIDOWS.”
I didn’t understand.
Not yet.
But I knew that word was not there by accident.
I picked up the folder.
Then I heard the front door open.
Candice was home.
I quickly closed the drawer.
But I was too late.
She appeared in the doorway.
Her smile disappeared when she saw my face.
“Gabriel?”
I looked at her.
For the first time since marrying her, I saw fear behind her eyes.
“What is the Widows folder?”
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.

She knew exactly what I meant.
