Chapter 10 - THE BABY WHO CAME BEFORE NOAH

The statement sounded impossible.

Then Sarah explained.

Six years earlier, before she met Daniel, another woman came to him.

Her name was Megan Foster.

She was pregnant.

Married.

Terrified.

The biological father was Jonathan Reed.

Jonathan denied it.

At first.

Then he saw the photograph.

Megan.

He sat down.

“I knew her.”

Caroline was present.

Her face emptied.

Jonathan admitted another affair.

Brief.

Years earlier.

Megan told him she had terminated the pregnancy.

He believed her.

Again.

Another woman.

Another pregnancy.

Another convenient ending he had accepted without demanding truth.

Megan had not terminated.

She had disappeared.

With Daniel’s help.

Her son would now be six.

Sarah found Megan’s name in the red book.

Daniel had written:

M. Foster / infant male / Reed.

That was why Sarah contacted Jonathan.

Not merely because she was carrying his twins.

Because she realized Daniel already possessed a secret that could destroy him.

Jonathan’s pattern changed the way we saw everything.

He had presented himself as another victim of Sarah’s lies.

He was partly that.

But he had also repeatedly created situations in which women carried the consequences while he returned to his family.

Caroline stood.

“I’m done.”

Jonathan didn’t stop her.

The investigation located Megan.

She was alive.

So was her son.

Daniel had helped her disappear from an abusive husband.

Unlike Sarah’s case, documentation supported her fear.

Daniel’s assistance had genuinely helped her at first.

Again, the man resisted becoming simple.

He had helped some people.

Exploited others.

Eventually learned that secrets were valuable.

Megan had never told Jonathan the child survived because she wanted no connection to him.

She wanted privacy now.

That boundary was respected.

Jonathan did not get a dramatic reunion.

He received a lawyer’s letter confirming paternity was a matter Megan would address only if legally necessary.

For the first time, Jonathan had to live with not being allowed into someone else’s story.

But the real Chapter 10 twist was not Jonathan.

It was Sarah.

Investigators compared the red-book handwriting.

Most entries were Daniel’s.

The later ones were Sarah’s.

Including Megan’s.

Sarah had not discovered Megan accidentally.

She had processed her file.

“When?” I asked.

“Two years ago.”

“You knew Jonathan had another child before you slept with him?”

Sarah looked down.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“Then why?”

Her eyes filled.

“I wanted someone who could get me out.”

Jonathan was a doctor.

Money.

Status.

Resources.

Sarah had not fallen randomly into an affair.

She had initially approached him because she knew who he was.

“You used him.”

“At first.”

“And then?”

“I loved him.”

I didn’t know whether that made it better or worse.

“Did you get pregnant intentionally?”

Sarah looked directly at me.

“No.”

I believed that she believed her answer.

Whether it was objectively true, only she knew.

But suddenly the entire story changed.

Sarah was neither helpless captive nor calculating criminal.

She had been both victim and participant at different times.

She used Daniel’s system.

Then Daniel used her.

She used Jonathan’s vulnerability.

Then Jonathan abandoned responsibility when truth became inconvenient.

She stole Emma from Mark believing she was protecting her.

Then trapped Emma inside years of lies.

Every adult had justified one harmful choice by pointing at someone else’s worse one.

And a seven-year-old had ended up barefoot, bleeding, pushing newborn twins into an emergency room.

Sarah covered her face.

“I thought if I could get enough money, I could take Emma and the babies somewhere Daniel couldn’t find us.”

I said:

“You already tried disappearing once.”

She looked at me.

“I know.”

“And?”

Her hands fell.

“That’s when I finally understood.”

“What?”

“You can’t build safety out of another lie.”

Then Ethan entered.

His face was tight.

“What happened?”

“Someone accessed Grace’s chart.”

Jonathan stood.

“Who?”

“Not hospital staff.”

The access came through a stolen patient-portal credential Sarah had used months earlier.

The login location had just been traced.

A motel outside Richmond.

Registered under one of Daniel’s aliases.

Daniel might not have been acting alone.

Someone else still had access to his identities.

And that person was looking specifically at Grace.
