Chapter 1

“She slipped in the shower.”
Ethan said it like he had practiced in the car.
Calm.
Clean.
Almost gentle.
The emergency room was bright enough to hurt her eyes.
Machines beeped beside the bed.
A thin hospital blanket covered her shaking body from the waist down, but it could not hide the swelling on her face, the split in her lip, or the bruises wrapping around her wrist.
Ethan stood close beside her in a black suit.
Too close.
His face looked worried for the nurse.
His hand under the blanket told the truth.
He squeezed her bruised wrist hard enough to make her eyes fly open.
Pain shot up her arm.
She tried not to cry out.
The nurse pulled the curtain halfway closed, still watching him carefully.
Ethan turned to her with a controlled little sigh.
“She’s always clumsy,” he said. “She gets dizzy when she’s upset.”
The nurse’s eyes dropped to the wife’s wrist.
Then to the faint marks on her neck, partly hidden beneath her tangled hair.
Her expression changed.
Ethan saw it.
His thumb pressed deeper into the bruise.
The wife’s breath caught.
Then Ethan leaned down beside her ear.
His lips barely moved.
“Say one word,” he whispered, “and you lose everything.”
For years, that sentence would have worked.
Her home.
Her money.
Her safety.
Her family.
Her voice.
He had taken pieces of all of them until she barely remembered what life felt like before fear.
But not tonight.
Tonight, he had made one mistake.
He had brought her to the hospital where her blood still knew the way home.
She turned her head slowly.
Tears slid down her temple into her hair.
Her voice was weak, but clear.
“You already did.”
Ethan froze.
Only for half a second.
May you like
But she saw it.
👉 But when she pointed to Ethan’s phone, the lie he brought into the ER started to collapse.
