Chapter 5

She changed one setting.

Ethan’s phone already backed up photos and videos to the cloud.

But he had disabled automatic upload for voice memos because he liked control.

She turned it on.

Then she connected the account to an old tablet hidden in a box of winter scarves.

Every time Ethan recorded her, the file copied.

Every time he took a photo, it uploaded.

Every time he forgot to delete a clip fast enough, it survived somewhere else.

For three weeks, she waited.

Not because she was weak.

Because leaving a man like Ethan without proof was stepping into another trap.

She called a domestic violence hotline from a grocery store bathroom.

She wrote down safety instructions on the back of a receipt.

She packed a small bag and hid it in the trunk of a neighbor’s car.

She planned to leave on a Friday while Ethan was at a business dinner.

But Ethan came home early.

He found the tablet.

The moment she saw it in his hand, she knew.

There was no performance now.

No soft voice.

No charming husband.

Just rage.

“You’ve been spying on me?”

She backed toward the hallway.

“I was protecting myself.”

“From what?”

His smile was horrible.

“From you.”

He moved fast.

She tried to reach the front door.

He caught her by the wrist and dragged her back so hard she hit the side table.

Her lip split against the edge.

She tasted blood immediately.

Ethan’s phone was already recording.

He had started it to catch her “acting crazy.”

Instead, it captured his hand on her wrist.

His voice.

His threats.

His face inches from hers.

“You think Liam can save you?” he hissed. “By the time I’m done, he’ll think you fell apart.”

She cried out when he shoved her.

Then he stopped.

Not because he regretted it.

Because she did not get back up.

For several seconds, he just stood there breathing.

Then the mask returned.

He dragged her into the bathroom.

Turned on the shower.

Splashed water across the floor.

Wet a towel.

Moved the bath mat.

Then he called 911.

“My wife slipped,” he said, his voice shaking perfectly. “Please hurry.”

He forgot his phone was still uploading.

He forgot the file had already crossed the one place his hands could not reach.

The cloud.

👉 By the time Ethan reached the ER, the evidence he created had already escaped him.
