Chapter 6
At the ER, Ethan tried to control every answer.
When the nurse asked what happened, he answered first.
When she asked the wife whether she felt safe, Ethan laughed softly and said, “She’s embarrassed.”
When the wife tried to move her hand, he squeezed it under the blanket.
The nurse was not fooled.
She had seen fear before.
Fear had a rhythm.
Fear looked at the abuser before answering the doctor.
Fear flinched from one touch and not another.
Fear apologized while bleeding.
The nurse stepped out and called the chief doctor on duty because the injuries did not match the story.
She did not know the woman in the bed was Liam’s sister.
She only knew someone needed to take Ethan out of the room.
Then Liam walked in.
And the whole case changed.
Now Ethan stood in the ER with his wrist trapped in Liam’s hand and two officers closing in behind him.
“You can’t touch me,” Ethan snapped.
Liam released him slowly.
“You’re right,” he said. “They can.”
One officer stepped forward.
“Sir, move away from the patient.”
Ethan looked at his wife.
His face twisted.
“You did this.”
Liam stepped between them.
“No,” he said. “You did.”
The nurse picked up Ethan’s phone with gloved hands and placed it into an evidence bag after the officers secured it.
Ethan began protesting immediately.
“That’s my property.”
The wife closed her eyes.
Even through the pain, she whispered, “Passcode is the date we met.”
Ethan stared at her like she had become a stranger.
Maybe she had.
Maybe the woman he knew was the one who stayed silent.
This woman was what remained when silence died.
The officers unlocked the phone with Ethan still shouting about privacy.
The newest video was there.
Still processing.
But playable.
The room heard Ethan’s voice first.
Say one word, and you lose everything.
Then another clip.
You think Liam can save you?
Liam went still.
His jaw tightened so hard the nurse looked at him with concern.
He did not move toward Ethan.
He did not lose control.
That was what made his anger terrifying.
