Chapter 2

Her hospital wristband scratched against the baby’s blanket.

Her phone vibrated in her other hand.

A message from the hospital billing office.

A missed call from a number she had ignored for months.

Audrey stared at the screen.

Then she pressed a contact she had not called since before the birth.

Dad.

Dominic saw her move.

His mouth twisted.

“Who are you calling? Another charity?”

Audrey lifted the phone to her ear.

Her voice changed.

It became quiet.

Steady.

Almost peaceful.

“Dad,” she said. “I need you now.”

Dominic’s smirk faded.

His mother leaned forward in the back seat.

“What did she say?”

Audrey did not answer them.

She listened.

Then she whispered, “Hospital entrance. Main discharge curb. Please hurry.”

She ended the call and held her baby closer.

Dominic laughed, but it sounded thinner now.

“Your father? The man who hasn’t shown up once? That’s your rescue plan?”

Audrey looked at him.

For the first time in their marriage, she let him see she was no longer afraid of disappointing him.

“No,” she said softly. “He was never the one who needed rescuing.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

Before he could answer, the sound came.

Engines.

More than one.

Fast.

A line of black cars turned hard into the hospital drive and stopped at the curb so sharply that Dominic stepped back.

Doors opened.

Security men in dark suits stepped out first.

Then an older man in a tailored coat got out of the center car.

He did not run.

He did not shout.

He walked straight toward Audrey with the controlled fury of a man who had spent a lifetime making powerful people nervous.

Dominic’s face went blank.

His mother’s smile vanished.

The older man stopped in front of Audrey.

His eyes dropped to the baby.

Then to her hospital robe.

Then to the money in her hand.

His jaw tightened.

When he looked at Dominic, his voice was quiet enough to terrify everyone nearby.

“You put my daughter and my grandson on a bus?”

Dominic swallowed.

Audrey held her baby and looked at the man she had married.

May you like

“You should’ve asked who my father was.”

👉 But sixteen months earlier, Dominic had thought Audrey was just a quiet girl with no power behind her name.
