Chapter 3

Sixteen months earlier, Dominic had met Audrey at a community fundraiser.

He had assumed she was staff.

Most people did.

She wore a simple black dress, no jewelry, and carried donation cards from table to table because she hated standing around pretending money made people interesting.

Dominic was charming that night.

Handsome.

Confident.

He made jokes about rich donors and told Audrey he admired women who worked hard.

He said he grew up with nothing.

He said he understood struggle.

Audrey believed him.

She did not tell him who her father was.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she wanted one person to love her before learning her last name could open doors.

Her father had built a logistics empire from one rented truck and turned it into one of the largest private companies in the country.

Audrey had grown up inside gates, chauffeurs, boardrooms, and expectations.

After her mother died, her father became protective to the point of suffocating her.

He wanted security with her everywhere.

He wanted every boyfriend investigated.

He wanted every choice approved.

Audrey wanted space.

So when she met Dominic, a man who knew nothing about her family and seemed to love her quiet life, she thought she had finally found freedom.

Her father warned her.

Not loudly.

Not cruelly.

Just with tired eyes.

“People do not have to know your money to use you, sweetheart.”

Audrey did not listen.

She married Dominic in a courthouse ceremony with only two witnesses.

Her father came, but he stood in the back and left early when Dominic barely shook his hand.

Dominic told Audrey later, “Your dad looks at me like I’m not good enough.”

Audrey said, “He looks at everyone that way.”

That was the lie she told to keep the peace.

After the wedding, Dominic changed slowly.

He complained about her apartment.

Then her clothes.

Then her friends.

He said a wife should not need her father’s help.

He said old money made people weak.

👉 But when Audrey became pregnant, Dominic’s cruelty stopped hiding behind charm.
