Chapter 9

One month later, Dominic requested a private meeting.
Audrey refused.
Her attorney allowed a supervised conversation in a courthouse conference room.
Dominic arrived with flowers.
Audrey did not touch them.
He looked thinner.
Angrier beneath the apology.
“I made a mistake,” he said.
Audrey looked at him.
“No. You made a plan.”
His jaw tightened.
“My mother was in my ear.”
“You were driving the car.”
He looked down.
“I want to see my son.”
“You can follow the court order.”
“I’m his father.”
Audrey’s voice stayed gentle, but firm.
“Then start acting like someone safe enough to earn that word.”
For a second, the old Dominic flashed in his eyes.
The man who wanted to punish her for not softening.
But there were cameras in the room.
A court supervisor at the table.
Her father outside the door.
Dominic swallowed his anger.
That was when Audrey understood something important.
He had not changed.
His audience had.
The divorce took months.
Audrey asked for protection, custody, medical security, and accountability.
Not revenge.
Dominic fought until the evidence made fighting look worse.
In the final hearing, the judge granted Audrey primary custody.
Dominic received limited supervised visitation with conditions.
Parenting classes.
Counseling.
No contact through his mother.
No disparaging Audrey.
No unsupervised access until he completed every requirement.
His mother was not permitted near the baby.
Audrey kept her father’s name off the battle as much as possible.
She did not want people saying he saved her with money.
The truth was simpler.
He had arrived.
But she had made the call.
She had recorded the abuse.
May you like
She had stood on that curb, stitched together and shaking, and still refused to disappear.
👉 Six months later, Audrey returned to the same hospital — not as a broken patient, but as a woman with a voice.
