Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER’S TARGET

Sarah had not seen me since I was twelve.
She faced seven women with my face.
Voss ordered her to identify her daughter by firing at the impostors.
The rifle carried one live round and six blanks.
He called it maternal verification.
Sarah placed the weapon on the floor.
“I don’t prove motherhood with a bullet.”
The system rejected her.
A hidden turret activated.
Nathan cut power.
Brooks opened the cells.
The six Victorias escaped.
Sarah looked at me.
She did not claim me immediately.
She asked:
“What did you call the tree behind our first apartment?”
“Captain Oak.”
Her eyes filled.

Then Voss triggered the archive wipe.
