Chapter 1 - The Patch Jake Didn’t Recognize

Ethan Carter’s palm struck my face hard enough to knock me sideways into a stainless-steel bench.

My breakfast tray clattered across the floor.

Coffee splashed over my boots.

The entire mess hall seemed to stop breathing.

Jake Thompson stood over me with the chicken drumstick he had taken from my tray lying near his shoe.

He looked down at it, then at me.

“Pick it up and eat it.”

A few recruits behind him laughed.

Not loudly anymore.

They were starting to realize I wasn’t reacting the way they expected.

I touched my cheek once.

No blood.

My jaw worked.

Nothing broken.

Ethan still had one hand half raised, as if he hadn’t decided whether he was proud of what he had done or nervous about it.

I looked at him.

Then Jake.

I didn’t raise my voice.

“Step back.”

Jake smiled.

“You giving orders now?”

“No.”

That answer confused him.

I got one knee underneath me.

Across the table, Noah Parker suddenly stopped smiling.

His eyes had gone to my left sleeve.

The yellow-and-black patch.

He stared for two full seconds.

Then his face changed.

Noah grabbed Jake’s forearm.

“Jake.”

Jake jerked away.

“What?”

“Stop.”

Noah lowered his voice.

“Right now.”

Jake laughed.

“Why?”

Noah didn’t answer.

He kept looking at the patch.

That was when I knew at least one of them understood.

The patch wasn’t rank.

It wasn’t decoration.

And it wasn’t something recruits normally saw in a breakfast line.

I rose slowly.

Shoulders square.

Hands relaxed.

Breathing steady.

The room became quieter with every inch.

I saw sailors at nearby tables watching.

Some recognized me.

Some didn’t.

A petty officer near the beverage station had already lowered his coffee.

Jake’s smile weakened.

Ethan stepped back.

I straightened my uniform.

Then I looked at the drumstick on the floor.

“Who told you to do this?”

Jake’s expression flickered.

That was the first mistake.

Not the slap.

Not taking my food.

That flicker.

Because I had not asked why he did it.

I had asked who told him.

Before he could answer, an alarm exploded through the mess hall.

Three sharp tones.

A pause.

Then a sustained warning.

Every trained sailor in the room reacted instantly.

Chairs scraped.

Conversations died.

Personnel moved toward assigned muster routes.

But Jake didn’t.

Neither did Ethan.

They looked at each other.

Noah looked at me.

And I watched Jake do something far more interesting than panic.

He reached into his trouser pocket.

Recruits were not supposed to have unsecured phones during that training block.

He pulled one out anyway.

The screen lit for less than a second.

A message appeared.

I only caught the first three words.

PHASE TWO NOW.

Jake saw me looking.

He shoved the phone back into his pocket.

The alarm continued screaming.

A chief petty officer entered through the side doors.

“EVERYONE MOVE!”

People surged toward the exits.

Jake stepped into the crowd.

I caught his wrist.

“Phone.”

His face hardened.

“Let go of me.”

“Phone.”

“You’re not my instructor.”

Noah moved beside him.

“Give it to her.”

Jake looked at Noah as if he had been betrayed.

Then Ethan grabbed my shoulder from behind.

Not a slap this time.

A deliberate attempt to break my grip.

I pivoted free.

The motion exposed my sleeve completely.

Jake finally read the small stitched identifier beneath the patch.

His arrogance disappeared.

“Ma’am…”

I took one step closer.

“What did you just receive?”

He shook his head.

The alarm cut off.

Dead silence.

Then the loudspeaker came alive.

“Lieutenant Commander Mitchell, report immediately to Command Security. Repeat: Lieutenant Commander Sarah Mitchell, report immediately.”

Jake stared at me.

Ethan stared at me.

Noah slowly released Jake’s arm.

The recruits around us went motionless.

Jake had spent the last ten minutes thinking he was humiliating an ordinary sailor eating breakfast alone.

Now he understood the yellow-and-black patch belonged to the Naval Training Integrity Assessment Team.

And the alarm had not been a drill.

My phone vibrated inside my pocket.

One secure message.

SECURITY BREACH CONFIRMED.

SOURCE: RECRUIT BARRACKS C.

I looked straight at Jake.

Barracks C was his building.

Then another line appeared.

POSSIBLE INSIDER ASSISTANCE.
