Chapter 1

“Now she knows who runs this family.”

Evan said it with a smile.

Not a nervous smile.

Not the kind a new father gives when he is overwhelmed, exhausted, and trying to act stronger than he feels.

It was a proud smile.

A cruel one.

Serena sat upright in the hospital bed, one arm wrapped around her newborn son, the other holding the blanket tight beneath his tiny chin.

The room smelled like antiseptic, baby lotion, and cold coffee.

A blue balloon floated near the window.

IT’S A BOY.

Everyone in the room had already taken pictures with the baby.

Everyone had already touched his little hands.

Everyone had already told Evan he looked like a father now.

But nobody had asked Serena why there was a dark purple bruise blooming along the side of her neck.

Nobody except the nurse, who had noticed.

And Serena had lowered her eyes and whispered, “I’m fine.”

Because Evan’s father, Douglas, was standing right there.

Because Evan’s aunt and two cousins were on the visitor couch.

Because Evan was leaning back in the chair beside her bed like a king on a throne.

And because Serena had learned during her marriage that pain was always treated as disrespect if she showed it in front of his family.

Douglas stood near the foot of the bed with his hands folded over his belt.

He did not smile.

He never had to.

His silence did most of the work.

Evan looked at the baby and then at Serena.

“My dad says a family needs order,” Evan continued. “Especially now.”

Serena pressed her lips together.

Her throat hurt when she swallowed.

Not from labor.

From Evan’s hand.

👉 Serena stayed silent to protect her newborn — but the bruise on her neck was about to expose everything Evan thought he could hide.
