Chapter 5

The aunt on the couch gasped.

Evan’s face twisted.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

Simon pointed toward Serena without taking his eyes off Evan.

“I know she gave birth today. I know she has a bruise on her neck. I know you stood in this room and bragged about running the family while she held a newborn in her arms.”

Evan took a step forward.

Simon did not move.

“Choose carefully,” Simon said.

Something in that calm warning stopped Evan cold.

Serena felt her baby stir.

She looked down at him and whispered, “It’s okay, Owen.”

Evan’s eyes flashed.

“That is not his name.”

Simon turned toward Serena again.

His voice changed instantly.

Gentle.

“Close your eyes, sweetheart.”

Serena looked up at him.

For a second, she was twelve again, sitting on her mother’s porch after Owen’s funeral, unable to breathe from crying.

Simon had sat beside her then, not saying much, just staying.

He had said the same words when the grief got too big.

Close your eyes, sweetheart.

I’m right here.

Serena closed her eyes.

But Simon did not hit anyone.

He did not need to.

Instead, he pressed the nurse call button.

Then he pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed.

His voice was steady.

“This is Simon Vale. I’m at Mercy General, maternity wing, room 418. I need hospital security and police response for a domestic assault involving a postpartum patient and a newborn.”

Evan exploded.

“You can’t do that.”

Simon looked at him.

“I just did.”

Douglas moved toward the door.

Simon’s gaze snapped to him.

“Stay.”

Douglas froze.

Evan stared at his father, furious and confused.

“Why are you scared of him?”

Douglas said nothing.

The room door opened within seconds.

A nurse entered first.

Then hospital security.

The nurse took one look at Serena’s neck and her face changed.

“Serena,” she said softly, “I’m going to take you and the baby to a private exam room.”

Evan stepped between them.

“She’s not going anywhere.”

Hospital security moved forward.

Simon did too.

Not fast.

Not aggressive.

Just enough.

Evan backed up.

For the first time, Serena saw it.

He was not powerful.

He had only been protected.

By silence.

By fear.

May you like

By people who pretended not to see.

👉 Evan had controlled Serena for years — but the moment hospital security stepped in, his power started to collapse.
