Chapter 6

The nurse helped Serena out of bed, gently supporting her as she held the baby.

Serena’s legs trembled.

Simon took the diaper bag from the chair.

When she passed Douglas, he would not look at her.

But Simon stopped beside him.

“You had a chance to end this with your generation,” Simon said. “Instead, you handed it to your son.”

Douglas’s face crumpled.

“I didn’t touch her.”

“No,” Simon said. “You just taught him how.”

The words landed in the room and stayed there.

In the private exam room, Serena finally cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silent tears falling onto the blanket wrapped around her son.

The nurse photographed the bruise for the medical record.

A police officer took Serena’s statement.

At first, her voice was barely there.

Then Simon sat in the corner, holding the bakery bag in his lap, and said, “Take your time.”

So she did.

She told the truth slowly.

About the phone checks.

The locked car keys.

The insults.

The night Evan shoved a chair into the wall beside her because dinner was late.

The way Douglas praised Evan for “keeping order.”

The way Evan grabbed her neck when she named the baby Owen.

The officer wrote everything down.

Every word.

When Serena finished, she looked exhausted.

But lighter.

As if the truth had been heavy enough to bruise her from the inside too.

Simon placed the cookies on the table.

“I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner,” he said.

Serena shook her head.

“I stopped answering.”

“I know.”

“I thought if I kept things quiet, it would get better.”

Simon’s eyes softened.

“That’s what people like him count on.”

Across the hall, Evan was yelling.

His voice carried through the door.

“You’re letting her manipulate you! She’s unstable! She just had a baby!”

Then another voice.

Douglas.

Lower.

Panicked.

“Stop talking, Evan.”

But Evan had inherited too much pride to hear danger when it spoke.

He kept going.

“She belongs with me. That’s my son.”

The officer in Serena’s room looked up.

Then stepped into the hallway.

Minutes later, Evan was escorted past the room in handcuffs.

He saw Serena through the open door.

His face changed.

Not with remorse.

With disbelief.

Like consequences were something that happened to other men.

“Serena,” he called. “Tell them this is a misunderstanding.”

She held Owen closer.

For the first time, she did not explain.

She did not soften.

She did not protect him.

“No,” she said.

Just one word.

But it was enough to close the door on the life he thought he owned.

👉 Serena finally said no — and Evan realized the woman he thought he controlled was no longer alone.
