Chapter 2

An hour earlier, the nurse had stepped out to get discharge papers.
Evan had leaned over the bed and told Serena they were naming the baby Douglas Jr.
Serena had said no.
Quietly.
Not as a challenge.
As a mother.
She had carried that child for nine months while Evan mocked her weight, controlled her phone, read her messages, and told her she had no idea what “real family loyalty” meant.
She had gone through twenty-three hours of labor while Evan complained that the hospital couch was uncomfortable.
She had held her son for the first time and felt something inside her become stronger than fear.
So when Evan said, “His name is Douglas,” Serena had looked down at the baby and whispered, “His name is Owen.”
Owen was her brother’s name.
Her little brother who had died in a car accident at nineteen.
The only person in her childhood who had ever made her feel safe.
Evan’s face had changed instantly.
He had grabbed her by the neck.
Not hard enough to leave fingerprints everywhere.
But hard enough to remind her what he could do when nobody stopped him.
“You don’t name my son after your dead trash family,” he hissed.
Serena had not screamed.
The baby was sleeping.
That was the part she hated most.
Even in pain, she had stayed quiet to protect him.
Now Evan sat back in front of his family, acting like the bruise was proof of discipline.
“Now she knows who runs this family,” he repeated.
His cousin gave a nervous laugh.
His aunt looked down at her purse.
Douglas looked at Serena for the first time.
“Marriage is easier,” he said, “when a wife understands the chain of command.”
Serena’s eyes filled.
But she did not cry.
She looked down at the baby.
His tiny mouth moved in his sleep.
His fist rested against her chest.
For the first time since she met Evan, Serena felt a line inside her that he could not cross.
Not with words.
Not with threats.
Not with his father standing there like a judge.
She lifted her head.
Her voice shook.
But it did not break.
“His name is Owen.”
Evan’s chair scraped violently against the floor.
He shot to his feet.
“What did you say?”
The baby startled.
Serena tightened her arms around him.
Evan took one step toward the bed.
Douglas did not stop him.
No one did.

Then the door opened.
👉 Evan thought no one in that room would protect Serena — until the one man he never expected walked in.
