Chapter 2: The Coffin Took a Breath

Chapter 2: The Coffin Took a Breath
From the back of the funeral home, two paramedics rushed in with a doctor who had been attending the service as a family friend.
One of them lifted the bouquet from Elena’s belly and set it aside.
Daniel would not let go of her hand.
Then her chest jerked.
A shallow, desperate breath pulled through her body.
The room went completely silent.
Her fingers tightened around Daniel’s.
His knees almost gave out.
“Elena?”
Her eyelids fluttered.
Slowly, painfully, she opened her eyes.
They found Daniel first.
Then the people behind him.
Then Victor.
Her lips parted.
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
“They tried to kill us.”
The words turned the funeral home colder than death.
Victor took one step back.
Daniel stared at his wife, tears streaming down his face.
“Who?” he whispered.
Elena’s eyes stayed locked on Victor.
Daniel turned slowly.
And for the first time in his life, he saw fear on his father’s face.
Three days earlier, Daniel had been standing in a hospital hallway, begging a doctor to let him see his wife.
Elena had been eight months pregnant.
Their daughter was due in five weeks.
They had already painted the nursery pale green.
Already argued over middle names.
Already folded tiny socks into the top drawer because Elena said baby clothes deserved respect.
That morning, Elena called Daniel from home.
Her voice sounded strange.
Weak.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “I don’t feel right.”
He stood up from his desk immediately.
“What happened?”
“I drank the tea your father sent up,” she said. “Then everything got heavy.”
Daniel’s blood went cold.
“Elena, call 911.”
“I did,” she whispered. “I’m scared.”
Those were the last words he heard before the line dropped.
By the time he reached the hospital, Victor was already there.
That alone should have felt wrong.
Victor lived forty minutes away.
Daniel had been fifteen minutes from the house.
But grief makes people miss details.
Fear makes them trust the loudest voice in the room.
Victor stood outside the emergency doors with his hand on Daniel’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Daniel pushed past him.
“Where is she?”
Victor’s grip tightened.
“Son.”
Daniel looked at his father’s face.
And he knew.

He collapsed against the wall before anyone said the word.
👉 Daniel thought he had lost his wife and unborn daughter — but the first lie had started before he ever reached the hospital.
