The officer stepped closer.
Victor slowly removed his hand.
Elena’s phone was in his pocket.
The room gasped.
Daniel stared at it like the object had become a weapon.
“Why do you have her phone?”
Victor’s mouth opened.
No answer came.
The officer took the phone.
Daniel unlocked it with Elena’s face while the paramedics prepared to move her.
Her eyes were barely open, but she whispered, “Drafts.”
Daniel found it.
One unsent email.
To him.
Subject line: If something happens to me.
His hands shook as he opened it.
There was an audio file attached.
A scanned document from an attorney.
A note.
Daniel, if I don’t wake up, do not trust your father. He threatened me because of the trust. He wants control before our daughter is born. I love you. I tried to tell you everything.
Daniel could not breathe.
The officer listened to the first part of the recording.
Victor’s voice came through clearly.
You will not raise my granddaughter to take what belongs to me.
Then another line.
If you won’t sign, I’ll make sure you never hold authority over anything.
Victor lunged forward.
“That is taken out of context.”
The officer turned toward him.
“Victor Whitmore, step away from the family.”
Elena was rushed to the ambulance.
Daniel climbed in beside her.
For the first time since the hospital, he refused to look back at his father.
At the emergency room, the truth unfolded fast.
Elena had been given a powerful sedative mixture that slowed her breathing and heart rate to a dangerous level.
Under normal care, she might have been monitored, treated, and stabilized.
But someone had pushed for immediate release to a private funeral home.
Someone had signed forms.
Someone had claimed Daniel was too distraught to make decisions.
Victor.
The baby survived.
That was the miracle no one had expected.
Elena’s body had slowed so severely that doctors initially believed both mother and child were lost.
But the baby’s movement in the casket had been strong enough to shift the flowers.
Strong enough to make Daniel see.
Strong enough to pull truth out of death’s hands.
Emergency surgeons delivered the baby that night.
