Chapter 6: The Baby Behind the Glass
Daniel saw his daughter through the NICU glass with both hands pressed against the window.
He cried so hard a nurse had to guide him to a chair.
Elena woke again two days later.
This time, in a real hospital bed.
With machines beside her.
A police guard outside her room.
And Daniel sitting in the chair, eyes swollen, still wearing the same black suit pants from the funeral because he had refused to leave.
“Elena,” he whispered when she looked at him.
Her first word was not about Victor.
Not about pain.
Not about revenge.
“The baby?”
Daniel broke.
“She’s alive,” he said. “She’s little, but she’s alive.”
Elena closed her eyes and sobbed.
Daniel leaned over her and cried into the blanket.
“I’m sorry,” he said again and again. “I should have believed you faster. I should have protected you.”
Elena touched his face.
“You came back to the casket.”
He shook his head.
“That’s not enough.”
“No,” she whispered. “But it’s where we start.”
Victor was arrested before Elena left the hospital.
The investigation found more than the recording.
Security footage from the house showed him entering Elena’s room after the tea was delivered.
Messages revealed he had pressured a private physician to certify the death quickly.
The funeral director admitted Victor insisted on rushing the service and keeping the casket closed until Daniel demanded one final goodbye.
The housekeeper confessed Victor had ordered her to deliver the tea but claimed she did not know it had been tampered with.
And the trust documents confirmed motive.
If Elena and the baby had died before the child was legally recognized as born, Victor could challenge control of the family trust.
If Daniel collapsed into grief, Victor could step in as manager.
It was not grief.
It was strategy.
That was what destroyed Daniel most.
