Chapter 2

PART 2:
The older man stepped forward.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His expression was calm.
But the entire room seemed to shift around him.
He looked Victor straight in the eye.
“And I own the company.”
Victor’s knees nearly buckled.
Serena went white.
Then Adrian Cross reached inside his coat and pulled out a thick file.
And everything Victor had buried under snow, lies, and fake tears began to surface.
Three weeks earlier, Elena had still been trying to save her marriage.
Not because Victor deserved it.
Because Noah deserved one last chance to have a family.
Elena had once believed Victor Hale was the kind of man people only wrote about.
Charming.
Protective.
Funny in that effortless way that made every room lean toward him.
When they met, he had made her feel safe.
By the time she was pregnant with their second child, Elena understood the truth.
Victor only looked gentle when life was going his way.
The moment things went wrong, he turned cruel.
His real estate deals had failed one after another.
He blamed the market.
Then his partners.
Then Elena.
He hated that she would not ask her father for money.
That part of Elena drove him crazy.
Because Elena Cross had been born into wealth most people could not imagine.
Her father, Adrian Cross, owned Cross Atlantic, one of the biggest insurance companies in the country.
But after Elena’s mother died, Adrian buried himself in work.
Elena never forgave him for how absent he had been.
She changed the way she lived.
She kept her distance.
She raised Noah quietly.
She wanted a real home, not a rich one.
Victor had loved that story when it made Elena seem noble.
He hated it when it meant he couldn’t touch her family’s money.
By the winter Noah turned six, the marriage was barely breathing.
Then Elena found the messages.
Victor had left his tablet unlocked on the kitchen island.
At first, she only meant to close it.
Then she saw Serena’s name.
A long chain of messages.
A hotel receipt.
A photo.
Then words that made Elena’s stomach turn cold.
Once the policy clears, we’re free.
He still thinks she suspects nothing.
Just make it look tragic.
Elena stared at the screen until her hands started shaking.
A few minutes later, she searched the home office and found the rest.
A life insurance policy on her.
A second rider on the unborn baby.
Accidental death coverage.
Victor as sole beneficiary.
The policy had been increased less than a month earlier.
When Victor came home that night, Elena said nothing.
She watched him kiss Noah on the head.
She watched him touch her belly and ask if the baby had been kicking.
She watched him smile.
May you like
And for the first time, that smile looked like something rotten wearing human skin.
👉 But when Victor suggested a weekend in the mountains, Elena realized the “tragic accident” might already have a date…
