Chapter 4

PART 4:
Elena slammed against a narrow ledge several feet below.
Pain shot through her shoulder and ribs.
Somehow, by instinct, she caught Noah and pulled him into her chest before he could slide farther.
Above them, Victor appeared at the edge.
Elena looked up, half-panicked, half-relieved.
“Victor!” she cried. “Call for help!”
Noah sobbed.
“Daddy!”
Victor stared down at them.
Alive.
Trapped.
Freezing.
He could see Elena struggling to hold Noah.
He could see the drop beneath them.
He could save them.
Instead, he crouched there, looking almost thoughtful.
Then he said the words Elena would hear in nightmares for the rest of her life.
“You should have signed.”
And he walked away.
Elena screamed after him until her throat tore raw.
No answer.
Only wind.
The cold sank in fast.
Noah was shaking so hard his teeth chattered.
Elena forced herself to breathe.
Panicking would kill them faster.
She had once been an Army medic.
Training took over where fear could not.
She pulled Noah into a hollow in the rock where the wind hit less directly.
She wrapped him in her coat and then in the emergency blanket she had stuffed in her backpack out of habit.
She kept him talking.
Kept him awake.
Kept him angry.
“Mommy, is Daddy coming back?” Noah whispered once.
Elena swallowed the knife in her throat.
“No,” she said. “So we’re going to save ourselves.”
Back at the lodge, Victor didn’t call 911 immediately.
That was the mistake that destroyed him.
He spent nearly forty minutes cleaning up his story, deleting messages, and calling Serena.
Then he reported a “terrible accident.”
What Victor did not know was that Elena had texted her father the lodge address the night before.
It was the first real contact they had shared in almost two years.
She had written only one sentence.
If anything feels wrong tomorrow, Noah is with me.
Adrian saw Victor’s call before he heard the news.
And he knew.
He knew because Victor’s voice sounded rehearsed.
He knew because Elena never would have taken Noah near exposed ice without ropes or a guide.
He knew because guilt sharpened instinct, and he had spent too many years failing his daughter to fail her again.
By the time county rescue launched, Adrian had already sent a private helicopter team equipped with thermal imaging.
They found heat on a ledge just after dawn.
Elena and Noah were barely conscious.
But alive.
Victor told everyone they had been lost.
He told reporters he was “praying for miracles.”
He stood outside the lodge in tears for the cameras while Elena lay in a hospital bed with bruised ribs, mild hypothermia, and a baby the doctors were fighting to protect.
And that should have been the end of his lies.

But greed makes stupid people reckless.
👉 Because before Victor even called for help, one timestamp had already exposed what kind of husband he really was…
