Chapter 6

PART 6:

Serena turned and tried to slip out the side aisle.

Two detectives blocked her path.

Victor looked wildly around the church, as if he could still talk his way out.

Then he pointed at Elena.

“She turned Noah against me. She always did this. She made me the villain.”

“No,” Elena said.

Her voice shook, but it did not break.

“You became that all by yourself.”

Victor lunged one step toward her.

The police were on him instantly.

They pinned his arms behind his back as he shouted, cursed, and begged Serena not to leave him.

She was already in handcuffs.

The guests who had once comforted him stepped away in disgust.

Even the priest looked sick.

As Victor was dragged past the casket he had prepared for his living wife, Elena watched him go without blinking.

For the first time in a long time, she wasn’t afraid.

Three months later, Victor was charged with attempted murder, insurance fraud, conspiracy, child endangerment, and filing a false report.

Serena took a plea deal and testified against him.

It only made his sentence worse.

He lost everything.

Not just the case.

His reputation.

His business ties.

His freedom.

Everything he had tried to buy with Elena’s death vanished in a courtroom.

But Elena did not celebrate.

She had survived him.

Noah had survived him.

Her unborn child had survived him.

And that was the only victory that mattered.

👉 But after the courtroom doors closed, Elena still had to rebuild the one thing Victor had tried hardest to destroy — her family…
