Chapter 8

PART 8:
On the first warm Sunday after Grace came home, Elena sat on the porch with Noah beside her and the baby asleep against her chest.
The air smelled like rain instead of ice.
Noah leaned against her arm and looked out at the yard.
For a long time, he didn’t speak.
Then he asked, “Are we okay now?”
Elena looked down at him.
She thought about the church.
The casket.
Victor’s voice cutting through the room.
She thought about the ridge.
The snow.
Noah screaming for his father.
She thought about the cold ledge where she had decided that if no one came, she would still fight.
She thought about Adrian, who had finally shown up when it mattered.
She thought about Grace, sleeping against her chest with a tiny fist curled against her blanket.
And for the first time, Elena did not feel like she was answering from fear.
She kissed the top of Noah’s head.
“Yes,” she said softly. “Now we are.”
This time, it was true.
Victor had tried to turn Elena into a payout.
He tried to bury her under snow.
He tried to mourn her in public while spending her death in private.
But he forgot one thing.
Elena had survived worse than his lies.
She had survived his cruelty.
She had survived the cold.
And when she walked into her own funeral alive, she didn’t just expose a husband.
She took back her name.
Her children.
Her future.

And the life Victor thought he had already collected on.
💬 What do you think was the most heartbreaking moment — Victor insulting Elena at her own funeral, or Noah revealing that his father looked at them and chose to walk away?
