Chapter 10 - The Brother Behind the Camera

I watched Daniel breathe.

That was the detail that broke me.

Not the scar.

Not the gun.

Not Hunter tied to the chair.

Daniel’s chest rose and fell beneath a dark wool coat.

Alive.

For seventeen years, I had carried grief like a second skeleton.

I had watched my father collapse at an empty grave.

I had blamed myself for missing Daniel’s last call because I was at a college party.

Now my brother stood inside a live video as if death had been a costume he had finally removed.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

His face changed when he heard my voice.

Only slightly.

But I saw my brother beneath the hard expression.

“Kylie.”

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

“Hunter isn’t.”

He glanced toward my husband.

Hunter’s mouth was bruised.

His suit jacket was gone.

A strip of tape covered one wrist where he had struggled against the restraints.

I hated Hunter.

But seeing him captive did not feel like justice.

It felt like another trap.

“Let him go,” I said.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You always protected the wrong people.”

“I’m not protecting him. I’m protecting myself from becoming you.”

The smile disappeared.

Good.

He was still my brother.

Which meant he still hated being seen clearly.

Isabelle moved closer to the laptop.

Daniel noticed her.

His eyes dropped to her stomach.

“Evelyn’s daughter.”

She stiffened.

“You knew my mother?”

“I loved your mother.”

The room went silent.

Isabelle’s eyes filled.

“You were married?”

“Yes.”

“Why did she never tell me?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because she believed you would be safer without my name.”

“Was she pregnant with me when the car crashed?”

“Yes.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“That is impossible. Isabelle was born six months after the crash.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Evelyn survived the crash.”

Isabelle gripped the desk.

“For how long?”

“Four months.”

Her knees weakened.

Victor caught her.

Daniel continued.

“Bell held us at the clinic. He wanted the evidence Evelyn had copied. She refused to tell him where it was.”

“Did he kill her?” Isabelle asked.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The single word crushed the room.

Isabelle did not scream.

She folded inward, both hands around her stomach.

I wanted to comfort her.

Then I remembered her voice on the phone.

When the money arrives, you won’t have to pretend to love her anymore.

Pain did not erase guilt.

But guilt did not erase pain either.

“Why did Bell keep you alive?” I asked.

“Because I knew how to access the Legacy Project’s genetic archive.”

“Why didn’t you come home?”

“Bell threatened you.”

“He had already destroyed our family.”

“He showed me recordings of you at school, at home, asleep in your bedroom. Every time I tried to escape, he moved closer to you.”

I felt cold.

“Where was Dad?”

“Trying to dismantle the project without exposing you.”

“He thought you were dead.”

“No,” Daniel said. “He knew I was alive.”

I stepped back.

The betrayal hit deeper than anything Hunter had done.

“My father knew?”

“He knew by 2012.”

“And he never told me.”

“He believed secrecy kept you safe.”

“Everyone keeps using that word.”

Daniel’s face softened.

“Kylie—”

“No. Hunter controlled me to protect me. Dad lied to protect me. You vanished to protect me. Do you understand what all that protection did?”

He said nothing.

“It left me surrounded by men who made decisions about my life while calling it love.”

Even Samuel lowered his eyes.

Hunter shifted in the chair.

“Ask him why he has me.”

Daniel looked at him with contempt.

“You don’t speak unless I allow it.”

I leaned toward the screen.

“Untie him.”

“No.”

“Then this call ends.”

“Kylie.”

“I just inherited control of the Legacy assets, didn’t I?”

His expression changed.

“Yes.”

“Then you need me.”

He looked almost proud.

“That sounds like a Rhodes.”

“It sounds like a woman who is done being used.”

Silence stretched between us.

Then Daniel nodded to someone off camera.

Bell entered the frame.

His hands were bound.

Blood stained his sleeve.

So the drop on my table had been his.

Daniel held the gun on both men.

“I took Hunter because Bell planned to kill him,” he said.

Hunter laughed bitterly.

“He planned to frame Kylie.”

Bell remained calm.

“You have no proof.”

Daniel reached into his coat and removed the sealed envelope.

My father’s handwriting faced the camera.

“The confession is inside,” he said.

“Bring it to the police,” I replied.

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the confession implicates federal judges, hospital executives, bankers, and two members of the attorney general’s office.”

Samuel went pale.

Daniel continued.

“The guardianship order was not just Hunter’s work. It was approved because the Legacy network is still operating.”

I looked at Samuel.

“Who filed the emergency order?”

He checked the digital record.

“The attorney listed is Margaret Reed.”

Samuel stopped breathing.

I looked at him.

“Who is Margaret Reed?”

His voice cracked.

“My daughter.”

The room shifted again.

Samuel had served my family for thirty years.

He had protected me tonight.

He had exposed Hunter’s fraud.

And his own daughter had filed the order designed to imprison me.

Daniel looked into the camera.

“Margaret works for Charles Vale.”

I frowned.

“Hunter’s father died five years ago.”

Daniel’s expression became grim.

“No. Charles staged his death just as I did.”

Hunter stopped struggling.

His face emptied.

“My father is alive?”

Bell smiled from his chair.

For the first time, Daniel’s confidence faltered.

A door opened somewhere behind the camera.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Measured.

Daniel raised the gun.

Bell began to laugh.

An older male voice spoke from the darkness.

“You were always too emotional, Daniel.”

Hunter recognized the voice before I did.

“Dad?”

The video shook.

A gunshot exploded.

The screen went black.

Then my phone received one final message.

COME TO THE OLD RHODES CLINIC ALONE, OR YOUR BROTHER AND HUSBAND BOTH DIE BEFORE SUNRISE.

Beneath the threat was a photograph of Charles Vale standing beside the clinic doors.

Alive.

Smiling.

May you like

And holding the sealed envelope my father had left for me.

👉 Kylie had finally uncovered the man behind her marriage, but entering the abandoned clinic would force her to choose between saving the brother she mourned and the husband who betrayed her.
